- Immortality is finally coming to PlayStation 5 on January 23, receiving rave reviews and a rare perfect score.
- Players can explore the mystery through live-action film clips, manipulating and analyzing scenes to unravel the story.
One of 2022’s highest-rated games, Sam Barlow’s Immortality, is coming to PlayStation 5 on Tuesday, January 23 for $19.99. Immortality originally launched in 2022 for PC and Xbox Series X as a day one Xbox Game Pass game, and at the time, it generated quite a bit of buzz.
Immortality earned a rare perfect 10/10 score from Edge magazine, with that high praise followed up by highly positive reviews from many other outlets. Immortality‘s overall critic rating was an impressive 88 by the time it was said and done, making it one of the highest-rated new video game releases of that year. It even found itself nominated for three different awards at The Game Awards 2022, though ultimately failed to take home any of the prizes.
Immortality: How Long to Beat
Immortality asks players to investigate a mystery using footage from three canceled films, but will it take three movies’ worth of time to finish?
Soon PS5 gamers will get to see what all the fuss is about, as Immortality is finally launching on PlayStation come January 23. Sam Barlow said he is “thrilled” to finally bring Immortality to PS5, and that one of developer Half Mermaid Productions’ goals was to share “Marissa Marcel’s life and work with as large an audience as possible.” Marissa Marcel, for the uninitiated, is the actress at the center of Immortality‘s story, portrayed by Manon Gage. Immortality‘s main goal is for players to solve the mystery of what happened to Marissa Marcel, and PS5 gamers will be able to take a crack at it soon enough.
What is Immortality?
Like Sam Barlow’s previous games, Immortality combines live-action film with video game mechanics. The primary way players interact with Immortality is by examining film clips, rewinding, fast-forwarding, and manipulating them in search of specific scenes, people, or objects. Players can then click on whatever they want in the scene, which will in turn take them to a different scene. Players bounce around from one movie to the next, analyzing scenes from the films, behind-the-scenes footage, Marcel’s talk show appearances promoting the movies, and more, all to unravel the big mystery at the center of it all.
Critics heaped praise on Immortality for its creepy vibes, unique premise, and brilliant storytelling. That being said, not all Immortality reviews were glowing, with some criticizing the game for being dull at times, especially if one gets stuck and can’t figure out how to progress the story further. The consensus is still mostly positive though, as evidenced by Immortality‘s 88 overall critic rating and the “Very Positive” overall reviews it has from Steam users.
