Path of Exile 2 has been in early access for a year and a half now, and gamers will soon get to see what the ARPG has in store next with an upcoming sneak peek at the Return of the Ancients expansion. With Path of Exile 2 still being in early access, the game has been growing alongside the player base, and this expansion could mark a new chapter for the dark fantasy title.

The last major update that was brought to Path of Exile 2 was The Last of the Druids. This update finally added the Druid class, which many players had been waiting for. Path of Exile 2‘s Druid class was a solid way to end 2025, but 2026 has been a little bit bare so far. Thankfully, the wait for more new content is finally almost over, as developer Grinding Gear Games has confirmed that players will get to see the first preview of the Return of the Ancients expansion next month.

May Finally Brings the Return of the Ancients Expansion to Path of Exile 2

Grinding Gear Games recently took to Twitter to announce that the first look at Return of the Ancients will be on May 7 at 1PM PDT. The preview will be broadcast to Twitch and will offer deeper details of what to expect from this expansion. So far, Grinding Gear Games has been tight-lipped about the finer aspects. The developer has at least confirmed that the 0.5 update will revamp the endgame, though. This isn’t the first Path of Exile 2 endgame update, so it will be intriguing to see how the devs are freshening up this major part of the game.

What’s even more exciting is that fans also have a release date to look forward to. Return of the Ancients will officially be available on May 29 for both PC and consoles. The teaser trailer that Grinding Gear Games has shared may have only been around 30 seconds long, but it makes the update seem as though it will be pretty significant. Every update has brought big changes in some regard. Back in August of last year, Path of Exile 2 The Third Edict added major upgrades like Act 4, sprinting, and even a new trade system.

Path of Exile 2 Continues Its Diablo 4 Rivalry

Path of Exile 2 and Diablo 4 have been direct competitors, with the former being known as the more hardcore experience while the latter is a more accessible ARPG. Regardless of preference, the timing of Path of Exile 2‘s new update is interesting. The Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred DLC comes out on April 28.

Path of Exile 2‘s expansion is arriving hot on the heels of a long-awaited Diablo 4 DLC, continuing this competitive streak. Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 have continued to clash with release timelines, and it’s going to be fun to see if this pattern keeps up. Only time will tell, but gamers in the Path of Exile 2 camp will now want to mark May 7 and May 29 on their calendars.
