- Pokemon games often follow a pattern in their announcement, release date, and titles, and the same is expected for Gen 5 remakes.
- Pokemon Scarlet and Violet use colors to represent the Scarlet Book and Violet Book in the game’s story, following the trend of deeper titles in remakes.
- Possible title options for Pokemon Black and White remakes include Yin Black and Yang White, Deep Black and Vast White, Dusk Black and Dawn White, or Coal Black and Ashen White.
Pokemon games typically follow a given pattern when it comes to their original announcement, release date, and even their associated critters and game titles, with an example being Pokemon Scarlet and Violet going back to the series’ roots due to their color-based names. This is not only tied to the original Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow, but it also plays on the story told in Gen 9 games and the color theory behind Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Game names in the series tend to be more than just a title, and it’s very likely that Gen 5 remakes will follow suit. Although remakes of the Gen 5 games have yet to be announced, they seem an inevitability, and their titles could be predictable too.
In the case of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, players eventually discover that these colors are not only associated with the Gen 9 Legendaries Koraidon and Miraidon, but rather they are used for the Scarlet Book and Violet Book – the manuscripts detailing Heath’s adventures in Area Zero. Remakes of past games have often gained new affixes to make them stand out, typically going deeper into the characteristics of the original title. This tradition recently touched the Gen 4 remakes, and it is expected to do the same with Unova games.

Why 4 Game Titles Feel Obvious For Pokemon Black and White Remakes
Past Pokemon Remakes’ Titles Explained
Speculation surrounding a set of new Unova Gen 5 Pokemon games has reached its all-time high following the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s Indigo Disk DLC because of the future Paradox Pokemon that represent the Swords of Justice – Iron Leaves, Iron Boulder, and Iron Crown. Combined with the many rumors and leaks of new Gen 5 games and the fact that they are next in line after Gen 4, it seems very likely that a new announcement will drop on Pokemon Day 2024.
If past remakes’ names are any indication of what to expect, fans can already make some educated guesses regarding the final title for Pokemon Black and White remakes. Past remakes include:
- Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (Gen 1)
- Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver (Gen 2)
- Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (Gen 3)
- Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (Gen 4)
Why Gen 5 Remakes Are Likely to Build on Color Themes
In the case of Gen 5, there are a few possibilities for Game Freak to go with. The first is Pokemon Yin Black and Yang White, making a strong case for the juxtaposition of the colors with a strong visual and conceptual cue that is the yin-yang. This would also make a lot of sense based on past releases as well as the lore of the Unova region, with Gen 5’s Original Dragon (a fusion of Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem) being a big part of it.
Another option could be Pokemon Deep Black and Vast White, which seems like another extremely plausible candidate due to Reshiram and Zekrom. These two Legendary Pokemon in Gen 5 are the mascots for the games, with Reshiram being called “Vast White,” whereas Zekrom is the “Deep Black Pokemon.” It would make sense to give Gen 5 remakes names that indicate some sort of quality of their associated colors, as it’s very similar to what past Pokemon titles did.
The third option would be Pokemon Dusk Black and Dawn White, similarly giving a different connotation to the colors that are front and center of Gen 5 games. Dusk and Dawn were also old Game Freak trademarks that were never used for any Pokemon game, and they would make sense in this context. Finally, more akin to the way Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were named, another option could be Pokemon Coal Black and Ashen White, giving the names an analogous tone to Gen 4.
