Pokemon Unite is coming to the end of its run, marking another major shutdown for a live-service game that has been around for more than 5 years. Pokemon Unite brought the franchise into the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre, allowing players to compete in team-based matches using some of the best Pokemon in the series.
Over the years, Pokemon Unite has continued expanding its roster with new playable Pokemon, additional content, and competitive events. Its 5-on-5 battles offered something different from the franchise’s usual turn-based combat, while the ongoing updates gave players reasons to keep returning. However, like any live-service game, Pokemon Unite depends on its online infrastructure to function. Once that support ends, players won’t simply be able to continue enjoying the game offline, and The Pokemon Company has now confirmed exactly when its servers will go dark.
Pokemon Unite Shutting Down in March 2027
Pokemon Unite is officially shutting down on March 23, 2027, at 12 AM UTC, ending service on both Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. Developers thanked players for supporting the game since its original launch on July 21, 2021. As part of the shutdown process, sales of Aeos gems have been suspended, alongside new Unite Club memberships and automatic renewals. Players can continue spending their existing Aeos gems until the servers close; current Unite Club members will retain their benefits until their existing membership periods expire.

Despite the announcement, Pokemon Unite isn’t ending immediately. A final major update is scheduled for November 12, introducing a special event. During the event, players will be able to obtain various rewards, including Unite licenses and Holowear released throughout Pokemon Unite‘s history. The previously announced Pokemon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo competitive tournament will also proceed as planned, with qualifiers beginning December 5. It’s a final opportunity for the community to celebrate the game before its online services disappear.
Interestingly, Pokemon Unite is also introducing a special library feature designed to preserve certain records and in-game content after the shutdown. Players will need to download the required library data before March 23 to access it once the servers go offline. However, the feature won’t preserve the actual gameplay experience. After the shutdown, players will no longer be able to log in or participate in battles, even if they previously downloaded the library. The data also generally cannot be transferred between devices, and support for the feature will end alongside the game itself.
The shutdown of Pokemon Unite is another reminder of the limitations of live-service games, particularly when there’s no offline alternative to preserve the experience. While the upcoming library feature will allow players to revisit some of their memories, it won’t replace the hundreds of hours spent battling alongside other Trainers. For now, Pokemon Unite players have just under 5 months remaining to enjoy the game before it becomes just another part of Pokemon history.
