A new detail within Pokemon Pokopia‘s Bubbly Basin DLC revealed who the Champion of Hoenn’s Pokemon League was before the events of the game: May. Bubbly Basin is the first of three planned DLC packs for Pokemon Pokopia that are included in the Expansion Pass.
Bubbly Basin is the fifth town that Pokemon Pokopia players can rebuild after purchasing the Expansion Pass for $34.99 on the Nintendo eShop. Pokemon Pokopia‘s first DLC was released alongside its version 2.0.0 content update on August 4. Pokemon Pokopia‘s 2.0.0 update gave players the ability to use Dive after befriending Manaphy in Bleak Beach, which is a prerequisite to exploring Bubbly Basin. Pokemon Pokopia version 2.0.0 allowed players to move items in bulk between a storage box and their inventory, alongside the option to delete unwanted items by placing them inside garbage bins.
Pokemon Pokopia Reveals New Connections to Past Games
While Pokemon Pokopia‘s Bubbly Basin has 31 new critters to befriend, Pokemon lore aficionados were also given some morsels to chew on. According to a Twitter user named Rasenburst, a record found in Pokemon Pokopia‘s first DLC noted that, in the game’s universe, the Champion of the Hoenn region was a female trainer. In Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, the canonical name for the female player character is May, with Brendan as her male Pokemon trainer counterpart. Ergo, Pokemon Pokopia has confirmed that May was the Champion of the Hoenn Pokemon League some time before the events of the game.
Given that Pokemon Pokopia is set in a post-apocalyptic version of the Kanto region, Rasenburst claimed that Pokemon Pokopia may share the same universe as Gen 7’s Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. Rasenburst also stated that players could find information that referenced Trace, the rival trainer from Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. Trace was mentioned alongside Marowak, whom Trace added to his team as a Cubone following the events atop the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town. Additionally, Pokemon Pokopia players who comb through Bubby Basin can discover and wear Misty’s outfit from Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, which consists of a white tank top and blue swimming shorts. Misty’s iconic hairstyle was previously available in Pokemon Pokopia by discovering a human record in the Withered Wasteland.

The note also mentioned how some items modeled after May’s Hoenn Pokemon League team were available to use in a Secret Base, which is a feature of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire and its remakes, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The timing of the note’s discovery is impeccable for Pokemon fans. Given that leaks about Switch ports of Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald have made the rounds on social media, it remains to be seen if the mention of the Hoenn region’s champion in Pokemon Pokopia is a coincidence or a case of subliminal messaging from The Pokemon Company.
As for Pokemon Pokopia itself, players looking for something else to do are in luck. Pokemon Pokopia will also host a new Feebas and Milotic event starting August 13, giving players another reason to return to the game.
