A Pokemon TCG card has sold for millions of dollars at auction, and this time, it’s not the coveted Pikachu Illustrator card. However, this newly-sold Pokemon TCG card is also desirable for similar reasons, which helped to propel its listing to the incredible price it ultimately sold for.
Even without trying to secure the rarest Pokemon cards around, Pokemon TCG can be an expensive hobby. Simply getting the newest releases can often be difficult, as available Pokemon TCG stock is often scooped up by scalpers and resold for inflated prices, and popular older cards can often come with large price tags, as well. However, for most collectors, a card like this one would be a holy grail, and not really intended to be utilized in an actual match.
Pokemon TCG Raincoat Pikachu Secures Millions
A Pokemon card known as Raincoat Pikachu or Fujishima Pikachu has scored a stunning $8.4 million USD at auction. The card was graded PSA 10, adding to its rarity and value, but the real cost comes from the fact that the card was never officially sold. The card was part of a contest held to promote the Pokemon Art Academy game, where fans could send in their artwork to potentially be featured on a Pokemon card. An artist only known as Y. Fujishima was chosen to be one of the selected artworks, and it’s believed that only 100 cards were ever produced with this particular artwork of Pikachu standing in the rain with a raincoat and umbrella. The card was originally produced back in 2015.

Curiously, the card sold for substantially more than it ever has before, despite listings appearing on the same auction site in 2024 and 2025. Those years saw PSA 10 Gem-quality instances of the card selling for $12,600 and $19,200, respectively. It’s not clear why this particular auction drew so much more attention and higher prices than the prior listings, but anyone who possesses one of these cards may be sitting on a veritable gold mine now that a copy has sold for so much. As time passes and the card becomes even rarer, especially at mint quality, it’s possible that the price could rise even higher.
The incredibly valuable Pokemon card has something in common with one of its counterparts, the Pikachu Illustrator. Both cards were never sold in stores, and were created following art contests. While the Pikachu Illustrator doesn’t feature the actual artwork that was entered into the contest, it’s believed that less than 40 copies of the card were ever distributed, adding to its value. A copy of Pikachu Illustrator sold for $16.4 million earlier in the year, though its cost was likely inflated due to being previously owned by Logan Paul. He had purchased the card for $5.2 million in 2021, so without a celebrity endorsement involved, the Pikachu Raincoat card has actually sold for a higher price.
As time continues to pass, the holy grails of Pokemon cards like these will only become rarer. The Pikachu Illustrator card is nearing its 30th anniversary, with it originally launching back in 1998, while Raincoat is only 11 years old at this time. It will be interesting to watch and see if the value of both of these cards continues to soar as more time passes.
