Pokemon Gen 10 is imminent, with the confirmation that Pokemon Winds and Waves is coming in 2027. Fans have already seen some of Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ open-world structure, but more importantly, they’ve already seen the Starters: the Grass chicken Browt, the Fire dog Pombon, and the Water gecko Gecqua. Game Freak and The Pokemon Company still have several new Pokemon to reveal, but what’s next is clear: the box art legendary Pokemon.

The past few generations have all followed a similar reveal structure: titles, world, and starters in the first trailer, box art legendaries in the second. This was true for Pokemon Sword and Shield, which revealed its titles, world, and starters on Pokemon Day in 2019, with Zacian and Zamazenta following in the second trailer. This was also true for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which revealed its title, world, and startesr on Pokemon Day in 2022, with Koraidon and Miraidon following in the second trailer. It’s worth noting that both second trailers were released the following June, and that timing could change this time around since Pokemon Winds and Waves release later than other mainline games. That doesn’t mean the strategy changes, however.

Pokemon Wind and Wave Gen 10 Leak Reveals Entire Region, Gyms, and More

Pokemon Gen 10 has already been a leaky ship, but the latest gives fans an in-depth overview of what the region has to offer.

In all likelihood, the second Pokemon Winds and Waves trailer will showcase the new box art legendaries. When is the biggest question right now, but “what” feels answered already. And because of Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ massive leaks, fans already know a broad description of these Pokemon. Riddler Khu, who has a proven track record, has described them as “wind grandpa and wave grandma,” which hints at several key details for these Pokemon.

There is likely some connection between Wavychu and Windychu and their respective legendaries.

Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Distinguishing Legendary Type

When it comes to box art legendary types, there is typically some symmetry or connection. It could be opposing forces, like Groudon and Kyogre, or two sides of the same coin: Koraidon and Miraidon, which are Fighting/Dragon and Electric/Dragon, respectively. It’s uncertain if the legendary will have two types, be monotype, or be monotype with a special form (a la Zacian and Zamazenta), but for now, the former seems likely.

It is practically certain that Pokemon Winds‘ box art legendary will have the Flying-type and Pokemon Waves’ box art legendary will have the Water-type. It makes no sense, as an example, for Pokemon Winds to be Ground-type and Pokemon Waves to be Fire-type as opposed to Flying/Water.

How Grandpa/Grandma Fit in Thematically

Grandpa and Grandma are more thematic than literal, although it would not be surprising to see these Pokemon seem or feel “aged.” A Grandpa implies a certain level of masculinity, with typical associations with the term being wisdom, ancient power, and/or spiritual, nature guardian. Grandma likewise implies a certain level of femininity, with similar associations with the addition of nurturing or life-giving. Those will likely determine each legendary’s secondary typing, if it has one.

In the case of Pokemon Winds, this could imply a Flying/Dragon-type to represent an ancient sky elder who is powerful and primal, a Flying/Psychic-type that is wise, sage-like, and/or humanoid or Kami-inspired, or perhaps Flying/Fairy if it leaned into it as a benevolent wind spirit.

  • Flying/Psychic
  • Flying/Fairy

Everything in the Pokemon Gen 10 Teraleak Explained

Images and documents related to Pokemon Gen 10 games, allegedly called Pokemon Wind and Wave, have surfaced online detailing their new content.

In the case of Pokemon Waves, this could imply Water/Fairy as a nurturing, life-giving force; Water/Dragon to represent an ancient sea, powerful sea entity; or Water/Ghost which leans into tides as memories with ancestral themes.

  • Water/Fairy
  • Water/Dragon
  • Water/Ghost

Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Typings Need a Strong Connection

The Safe Route

When it comes to the symmetrical approach, Flying/Dragon and Water/Dragon make the most sense. They both could represent the power of the winds and the waves this way. And there’s no real ruling it out. Dragons are often used in legendary types, and while Pokemon Scarlet and Violet both featured Dragon-type legendaries, Pokemon Gen 4 and Gen 5 both did too. It is the safest, less interesting route.

  • Flying/Dragon and Water/Dragon

The Strongest Theme (With Different Types)

Sometimes one legendary is simply stronger than its opposition, and it’s hard to say how the exact approach is decided. But the Flying/Dragon and Water/Fairy combo is perhaps the most interesting. Flying/Dragon is a nice, clean typing that could represent an ancient masculine force like a Sky Elder, while Water/Fairy creates this beautiful sea matriarch theme. The Sea vs. Sky contrast stays clean, and it would be an interesting combo based on theme more than just balance and Dragon-typing.

  • Flying/Dragon and Water/Fairy

In this case, Water/Fairy would have the Type advantage as Fairy could easily dominate the Dragon typing. That said, there would be a real chance that Flying/Dragon would have Electric-type moves. It wouldn’t get STAB, but it would help level the playing field all the same.

The Secret Third Thing Could Be the Most Interesting

If Pokemon Winds and Waves lean into its ancestral, creating-a-better-world-for-your-children themes, then the third option could see Game Freak lean harder into “elder spirits” of the sky and seas. It would be interesting to see, competitively and lore-wise, how Flying/Psychic and Water/Ghost turns out. Both could represent “wind grandpa” and “wave grandma” easily, with the former adopting more of a Wind Sage-like design and the latter representing the ancestral, nurturing ocean.

  • Flying/Psychic and Water/Ghost

What’s more, the logic still stands competitively. Water/Ghost would have the advantage, as Ghost beats out Psychic, but Flying/Psychic could still learn something like Thunder to even the playing field. And it would be a very interesting design decision, depending on how Pokemon Gen 10 approaches lore.

In complete tinfoil hat territory, the splash art for Pokemon Waves sees a hint of purple involved, which would be easily associated with Ghost-type Pokemon. Also, the recent release of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen kept the odd Gen 1 dynamic of the Ghost/Psychic type, which this could hearken back to.

Flying and Water-Type Legendaries Are Locked In

While the secondary typing, if there is one, is not completely locked in, the titles all but officially confirm Flying- and Water-type legendaries. The interplay will be interesting to see, but for now, fans will just have to wait and see. Trailer 2 is months out, at least, but it’s likely to confirm the Legendary Pokemon’s designs.
