A new theory indicates that Pokemon Winds and Waves could include a new Pokemon form with a connection to former United States President Barack Obama. The theory has originated from information discovered in Pokemon Pokopia, which players think could be hinting at things to come in the next mainline games, Pokemon Winds and Waves.
This isn’t the first time that players have noticed an apparent connection between Pokemon Pokopia and Pokemon Winds and Waves. Previously, players noticed that a poster in Pokemon Pokopia bears a resemblance to a moment in the Pokemon Winds and Waves trailer, where a number of Lumineon can be seen swimming. While there’s no guarantee that there’s a connection between the two games, players have been scouring Pokemon Pokopia for clues about what’s to come in the franchise.
Pokemon Winds and Waves Leak Points to the Biggest Region Yet
A recent leak suggests the upcoming Pokemon Winds and Waves may put players in the largest region of any game in the series to date.
Pokemon Pokopia Fans Think a New Pokemon Form is Connected to Obama
Back when Pokemon Pokopia released, it didn’t take long for players to discover a reference to a yellow Shellos, which doesn’t exist in the mainline games. Shellos has pink and blue forms, with the Pokemon taking on the pink appearance in the West Sea, or blue in the East Sea. Shellos Pokemon are inspired by real-world sea slugs, and back in 2017, a new kind of yellow sea slug was discovered in the real world. That sea slug was given an official name of Placida barackobamai, with Barack Obama’s name used as inspiration as a way of giving him a nod for his efforts towards environmental conservation. It’s possible that yellow sea slug could be what a future yellow Shellos will be based upon.

Given Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ emphasis on island habitats and the ocean, it seems likely that the game will introduce new forms of existing Pokemon with variations based on the game’s location. Fans have also pointed to the belief that the region of Pokemon Winds and Waves takes inspiration from Indonesia, where Obama briefly lived during his childhood. However, all of this should be taken with a considerable grain of salt, as the presence of a yellow Shellos hasn’t been confirmed for Pokemon Winds and Waves, nor is there any guarantee that a yellow Shellos would be based upon the specific Placida barackobamai sea slug.
It’s clear that Pokemon fans are extremely eager to learn more about the upcoming games, although Pokemon Winds and Waves aren’t expected to release until 2027. A recent leak indicates that the games may land in late 2027, which could mean that players won’t get any further details about Pokemon Winds and Waves in 2026. Even then, players may not get confirmation on whether a yellow Shellos appears in the games until the games actually launch. Until then, though, fans will likely keep poring over Pokemon Pokopia for more potential clues.

Curiously, this isn’t the first time in recent history that fans of a game have fixated on Obama, even without any concrete connection. At the end of 2025, ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia introduced a new type of ghost, called Obambo. It didn’t take long for players to start referring to the ghost type to Obama instead. While there’s no connection between Obambo and Obama, it will be interesting to see if Pokemon Pokopia players are on to something here, or if the line about a yellow Shellos turns out to just be random flavor text with no real meaning.
