A Pokemon Winds and Waves fan redesigned the starters from the upcoming Pokemon games as sprites from the Pokemon Gold and Silver era. The fan-made Gen 2 sprites of the Pokemon Winds and Waves starters, which are called Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua, were then posted on social media for all Pokemon fans to see.
During the February 27 Pokemon Presents episode, The Pokemon Company closed the show by giving fans the first official glimpses of Pokemon Winds and Waves. Set in a yet-unnamed island region, Pokemon Winds and Waves are exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The Pokemon Winds and Waves teaser also gave Pokemon fans the first looks at the new Gen 10 starters. Once the games arrives in 2027, Pokemon trainers can choose between the Grass-type Browt, the Fire-type Pombon, and the Water-type Gecqua.
Pokemon Pokopia is Currently the Highest-Rated Pokemon Game of All Time
Critic reviews for Pokemon Pokopia start rolling in, and there’s enough praise going around to make the game the best-rated title in the franchise.
Pokemon Fan Gives Gen 10’s Starter Trio a Retro Makeover
Following the Pokemon Day festivities, a Pokemon fan posted their re-creation of what the first encounter with the starters of Pokemon Winds and Waves would look like in Gen 2’s iconic sprite style. The Twitter feed Gen2Sprites posted an image of what Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua would look like as overworld sprites from Pokemon Gold and Silver. Additional sprites were made of the Pokemon Winds and Waves protagonists in their version-exclusive outfits, with the Pokemon Winds trainer on the left, and the Pokemon Waves trainer on the right. Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua were lined up from left to right, amid a field of tall grass and palm trees. Browt’s sprout-shaped eyebrows, Pombon’s fur and tongue, and Gecqua’s eyeliner could be seen in each Gen 2-inspired sprite. In response, one Pokemon fan compared the Gen2Sprites post to a cutscene from Pokemon Crystal, in which Johto’s Legendary Beasts flee the Burned Tower after being accidentally awoken by the player character.
Shortly after revealing Pokemon Winds and Waves for the first time, The Pokemon Company shared a few more details about the Gen 10 starters via some Pokedex data that will appear in the games. Browt is categorized as the Bean Chick Pokemon, and is known for running around while photosynthesizing using the leaves on its eyebrows. Pombon is the fiery and friendly Puppy Pokemon that has a heat-generating organ that glows beneath its throat. Finally, Gecqua is a Water Gecko Pokemon that launches balls of water from its tail, and is known to be an intelligent and shrewd battler. Pombon is the tallest and heaviest of the three Pokemon Winds and Waves starters, clocking in at 1’4″ and 14.8 lbs. Each starter also has the long-running abilities Overgrow, Blaze, and Torrent, which boost the power of specific moves once they drop below a third of their maximum HP. Other details about the new starter Pokemon remained elusive.
Pokemon’s New Starters Are Already Popular Among Fan Artists
Given that the reveal of Pokemon Winds and Waves is still a fresh topic in the minds of Pokemon trainers, some Pokemon fan artists created their interpretations of what the fully-evolved Gen 10 starters could look like. One interpretation turned Browt into a gigantic bird with long tail feathers and an exaggerated eyebrow, gave Gecqua’s final form a draconic visage, and made Pombon’s fiery body more striking. As Pokemon Winds and Waves draws closer to its release, time will tell when The Pokemon Company will reveal the fully-evolved designs, and elemental types, of Gen 10’s starter trio.
However, Pokemon fans will be waiting quite a while for that information. Pokemon Winds and Waves are slated to launch on Switch 2 sometime in 2027, after Pokemon‘s 30th anniversary concludes. Given the long wait, the current ninth Pokemon game generation will be the longest-running generation to date. With Pokemon Winds and Waves also being exclusive to the Switch 2, fans interested in playing Pokemon‘s next generation should pick one up before prices change.
