As it is with almost every generation, Pokemon fans are making their preference for Starter body types known well ahead of release. In the case of Pokemon Winds and Waves, fans are united in what Pombon should look like, but also in their worry about what it could look like.
Unfortunately, confirmation is not happening anytime soon. At Pokemon Day, Pokemon Winds and Waves was confirmed for 2027—already a later than usual release—but many insiders have come out since to suggest that it’s a late 2027 release. Many indicate that there will be no further Pokemon Winds and Waves news until 2027 comes around, which is disappointing, but it does mean that Game Freak is hard at work on it (as well as its new game, Beast of Reincarnation).

Pokemon Winds and Waves Fans Want Pombon to Stay on Four Feet
That lack of news has never stopped gamers, though, and there is already tons of new concept/fan art out there of Pokemon Winds and Waves starters: the Grass-type Browt, the Water-type Gecqua, and the Fire-type Pombon. Reddit user Iker_320 recently shared their art for Pombon’s final form, which is inspired by the Barong of Indonesian Mythology since the region is based on Southeast Asia. It looks badass, plain and simple, but it also highlights what fans want: Pombon to remain on all fours. Too many Pokemon starters start off as quadrupedal creatures to end up on two feet.

The comments all reflect this sentiment as well, with one fan praising it in one breath and saying “please stay on four legs” in another. Another, more disgruntled, said, “I fully expect it to stand up and become a cheerleader with pom poms.” And overall, the message is clear. Whatever Pombon’s final evolution is like in Pokemon Winds and Waves, fans want it to remain on four feet instead of two. Unfortunately, there are many such cases of this not happening, and it is often a head-scratcher.
Based on their general appearance or initial body types, it sometimes makes sense for a Pokemon to end up as a humanoid creature. There are many beloved Pokemon like Lopunny who fit this description, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Browt or Gecqua end up as bipedal creatures. Pombon, as a literal dog on four feet, would be strange to see quickly turn into a bipedal creature, and a good example of the odd transformation is Gen 7 fire starter Litten. Litten and Torracat make sense, but then it becomes a pro wrestling tiger-cat in Incineroar. And that’s not to say Incineroar is a bad Starter or a bad Pokemon at all, it’s just a wild jump from Torracat to Incineroar (especially for fans who go into a new Pokemon game as blind as possible).

Even when Pokemon Winds and Waves marketing begins in full, it’s not certain when or if Game Freak will officially reveal these final evolutions. All of this said, there’s no doubt that many fans are ready to dive into the open world of Pokemon Winds and Waves as soon as Game Freak is ready to release it.
