Pokemon Winds and Waves are officially coming out next year, and while their 2027 release window caught most fans by surprise, it could be a blessing in disguise to have Gen 10 later than expected. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet had massive issues with performance on release, and this marred their reputation for their entire run, which has coincidentally been the longest ever. As such, when Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ reveal trailer was aired on Pokemon Day, many fans were pleased with Gen 10’s world so far. The trailer revealed the three starters for Gen 10, a bit of the new region, some returning Pokemon, and two strange Pikachu variants.

Not everyone is happy with Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu, which is understandable, given how different they look compared to a regular Pikachu. There may be much more than meets the eye to Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu, even though their appearance and official descriptions make it seem like they’re just two odd Pikachu who will help you throughout your journey. However, between their clothes matching Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ logos and the protagonists’ version-exclusive outfits, the mysterious cloud at the end of the trailer, and previous leaks, it’s very likely that these two Pikachu variants have a close connection with the box Legendaries for Gen 10.

Your Outfit in Pokemon Winds and Waves Depends on Which Version You Buy

In Pokemon Winds and Waves, the version you buy determines your trainer’s starting outfit, adding a stylish twist to version exclusives.

Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Box Legendaries Are Already Clear

Box Legendary Pokemon in Gen 10 have yet to be revealed, but they will likely play a big role in determining which version is more appealing to fans before launch. After all, box Legendaries are always version exclusive, and it can be an important choice to get the best game for one’s liking. In the case of Pokemon Winds and Waves, there are some clues.

  • According to Pokemon Gen 10’s Teraleak 2, the box Legendaries will be inspired by a “wind grandpa and wave grandma,” a detail that came to light in October 2025.
  • Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu fit the “wind grandpa and wave grandma” archetypes from the leaks.
  • Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ leaks pointed to a battle gimmick called Rebirth where Pokemon could be reborn after being defeated and get special Reborn forms in some cases, which could be the case for Pikachu.
  • Importantly, the Pokemon Winds and Waves official trailer includes a scene where you can see a Pokemon’s shadow appear beyond the protagonist’s room, where a regular Pikachu is looking. It could be a distorted Pikachu, like in Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ leaked battle gimmick, but it could also be that Mr. Windychu’s and Ms. Wavychu’s real form is something else entirely — the box Legendaries themselves, projecting a distorted shadow because they are not really Pikachu.

Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Windychu and Wavychu May be Other Pokemon in Disguise

Considering that Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ region is inspired by Southeast Asia, which has plenty of folklore tales and legends where supernatural or divine beings disguise themselves as humans or animals, it does seem plausible that Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are not who they seem at first glance. It would also make for an interesting take on Legendary Pokemon, as none of them transform into different critters. Mew can, but it’s a Mythical Pokemon, and this is not exactly woven into its identity like it is for Pokemon like Ditto and Zorua or Zoroark.

As strange as it may sound, there is a strong possibility that Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are more than just tanned Pikachu variants donning human clothing. If this is the case, it will likely remain undisclosed until launch. However, a possibility is that Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu will be usable in combat and then turn into the box Legendaries via the Rebirth mechanic, unlocking their true forms. For now, this is mere speculation, but it makes sense when putting all the puzzle pieces together, assuming that the leaks so far have all been true.
