The Level-5 Craftsmanship livestream and a new trailer on April 10, 2026 provided new information on the highly-anticipated Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, revealing new features, story details, voice cast members, and perhaps most interestingly, that it will be a simultaneous worldwide release not just on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 but on PlayStation 5 and Steam. Between 2007 and 2013, the Professor Layton series released six mainline games and an anime movie, chronicling the adventures of Professor Hershel Layton and his assistant Luke Triton as they solved mysteries. After an attempt at a revival with a different cast in Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy in 2017 failed, sending the series into another hiatus, fans were very excited to see the good professor back when Professor Layton and the New World of Steam was announced in a 2023 Nintendo Direct.

Professor Layton is known for its brain-teasing puzzle gameplay punctuating its point-and-click navigation, all presented with aesthetics that match the best Studio Ghibli films. New World of Steam will naturally be bringing back the puzzles the series is famous for, with new cel-shaded 3D visuals to take advantage of the new technology it’s on. Layton and Luke will return as the main protagonists for the first time since Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, bringing the duo back into the spotlight for the first time in 13 years as they team up to investigate mysterious happenings in the American town of Steam Bison.

The New Professor Layton Game Almost Didn’t Happen

A new report suggests that the upcoming Professor Layton game came to fruition only because certain figures in the industry pushed for it.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam Trailer Confirms New Features and Multiplatform Release

The newest trailer for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam reveals more details about the game’s story and gives a sneak peek of the many puzzles. It also confirms that the game will be coming to PlayStation 5 and Steam along with the Switch 1 and 2 releases, which will make this the first game in the series on a Sony console or PC. Besides Mystery Journey, which is largely its own thing anyway, all other main Professor Layton games launched on Nintendo platforms.

Confirmed New Features for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam:

  • Coin Radar Mode
  • World Map
  • Updated Movement
  • Puzzles That Help the Town Grow
  • New Companion Characters
  • Cutscenes in Full 3D
  • Mouse Support (Excluding Nintendo Switch)

All of that is on top of returning features, like the series’ signature puzzle-solving gameplay. In fact, New World of Steam will have the most puzzles in Professor Layton history. The puzzles will be designed by QuizKnock, a Japanese media group and YouTube channel that creates quiz questions.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam certainly has the presentation that Level-5 is famous for, and they seem to be going all out this time for the return of gaming’s most famous British archaeology professor. They’re even hiring Joe Hisaishi, who composed the score for several of the most famous Studio Ghibli films, and Yoasobi vocalist Lilas Ikuta (known for theme songs to anime like Oshi no Ko and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) for the game’s theme song. That being said, some fans are naturally disappointed to hear that cutscenes will be “in full 3D,” as that implies the series’ wonderful 2D-animated cutscenes will be entirely gone this time.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam only has a general late 2026 release date so far, with no date or month revealed yet. But it’s already April, so it’s only a matter of time before fans get to go puzzle-solving with their favorite professor again. And after Level-5 ceased several of its American operations in 2020 and major titles like Yo-Kai Watch 4 never getting localized, it’s a relief to see it truly catering to international fans again with a worldwide simultaneous release.
