Without proper maintenance, it’s all too common for PlayStation 5 consoles to overheat and shut down unexpectedly mid-game. Nine times out of ten, this issue can be addressed by getting rid of the dust inside the PlayStation 5’s fans, but it occasionally calls for an experienced technician to dismantle the console and reapply liquid metal between the APU and heatsink. One user recently experienced an overheating issue that required a complete strip-down of the PS5, but what was found inside was absolutely shocking.
It’s been a busy few months for PS5 users, and there don’t seem to be any signs of things slowing down for the rest of the year. While there’s still over six months left to go until 2026’s biggest release, Grand Theft Auto 6, hits shelves, PS5 owners have tons of big launches to look forward to before then. Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, and Saros have already been the talk of the town, but the coming weeks will see the release of Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, 007 First Light, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, and many more. As for exclusives, the highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine will finally release for PS5 on September 15.

Bug Infestation Causes PS5 to Overheat
With so many great games this year, everyone’s PlayStation 5 consoles are likely working overtime, which can occasionally lead to some overheating issues. It’s not uncommon for a PS5 to overheat, whether it be due to a buildup of dust, blocked airflow, dried thermal pads, or the liquid metal between the APU and heatsink failing. What is less common, however, is a bug infestation causing a PS5 to overheat.
A post from Twitter user AlphaFox has recently gone viral, accumulating more than 2.3 million views at the time of writing, as it shows an unknown repair store dismantling a PS5 console that is riddled with cockroaches and various other bugs. From the SSD to the fans and heatsinks, the entirety of the console had been taken over by the tiny creatures, resulting in some serious TLC being required.

One of the worst possible scenarios that could cause a PS5 to overheat is a failure in the liquid metal between the APU and heatsink. A few years ago, a report incorrectly stated that standing a PS5 in its upright position could cause the liquid metal to leak, thus resulting in overheating issues quicker than usual. However, this report was quickly corrected after it was discovered that the issue is actually more commonly tied to consoles that had been opened up by technicians for other repairs. It still seems as though standing a console vertically could cause the liquid metal to deteriorate more quickly than if it were placed horizontally, but the actual severity of this problem is something often debated by users.
Clearly, it’s something that Sony took into consideration when designing the PlayStation 5’s more powerful counterpart, as the PS5 Pro seemingly addresses the design flaw. Although the risk remains minimal for those who haven’t opened up their console for repairs, the PS5 Pro has still been engineered to mitigate any potential liquid metal failures with a new surface ridge design that helps distribute the liquid metal evenly over the APU.

For those who have yet to bite the bullet and purchase one of Sony’s flagship consoles, now might not be the best time to do so. Although Grand Theft Auto 6 is right around the corner and will likely see a huge influx of PS5 sales, Sony recently increased the price of the console in most regions. The digital edition PS5 is now priced at $599.99, while the standard edition with disc drive is $649.99. For anybody looking to purchase the Pro, the more powerful PS5 now costs a whopping $899.99.
