Rumors are making the rounds online that Capcom is moving forward with a full-blown remake of the original Resident Evil game, which would mark the second remake of the groundbreaking survival-horror classic. The original Resident Evil released in 1996, coining the term survival-horror and kicking off one of the industry’s most successful franchises. Since Resident Evil‘s early days, Capcom has made remakes of the games, and has found a great deal of success doing so.
The first Resident Evil remake was released in 2002 and was a brand-new take on the original. The remake featured significantly improved graphics, brand-new gameplay mechanics, new characters, new story elements, and a generally spookier vibe. Generally considered one of the best video game remakes of all time, it was eventually followed by a Resident Evil 2 remake that reimagined that game with the over-the-shoulder stylings of RE4. A Resident Evil 3 remake followed, and then a Resident Evil 4 remake came after that.

Resident Evil 1 Remake Rumored to Be in Production at Capcom
Now it seems Capcom may be looking to do another remake of the original Resident Evil game. The other Resident Evil remakes have all utilized the same over-the-shoulder style, whereas the original Resident Evil and its 2002 remake both use fixed-camera angles. A new RE1 remake could bring it in line with the other remakes, and now it seems such a project may very well be in the works. According to frequent Resident Evil leaker AestheticGamer, Capcom’s second Resident Evil 1 remake is in the early stages of development and is likely 4-7 years from release. They did caution that the remake could potentially get scrapped, however.

Even though there is already a remake of the original Resident Evil, there is certainly room for a second one. Beyond creating parity between Resident Evil 1 and the other remakes in terms of style, one has to imagine that a first-person version of the game would also be a worthwhile endeavor. The first-person perspectives used in Resident Evil 7, Village, and Requiem have all been praised for being much more immersive than the typical third-person viewpoint, and it would be awesome to explore the Spencer Mansion that way. Of course, the best case scenario for a new Resident Evil 1 remake is that it takes a page out of Requiem‘s book and lets players choose between first- and third-person perspectives — that way it could appeal to fans of both styles.
There Are Other Resident Evil Remakes on the Way First
The prospect of a second Resident Evil 1 remake is incredibly exciting, especially for old-school fans of the franchise, but it seems as though there are other remakes on the way first. The same leaker has said that the next game in the series is a Resident Evil — Code: Veronica remake, which will supposedly release in 2027. A Resident Evil Zero remake is expected to follow in 2028, with Resident Evil 10 currently planned for 2029.
Now, it’s entirely possible that release plans will change and push the games back, but Capcom has stuck to an annual release schedule for Resident Evil before. It’s not outside the realm of possibility that the Resident Evil 1 remake will drop in 2030, but a more fitting release year may be 2031. After all, that will make the 35th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise, and there would be no better way to celebrate than to go back to the game that started it all.
Once the Resident Evil 1 remake is out, all that’s left in terms of main series remakes would be Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. Resident Evil 5‘s co-op focus may make that a trickier game to remake, and considering Resident Evil 6 is often pointed to as the worst game in the main series, remaking that may also prove challenging. Whatever the case may be, it will be interesting to see what the future of Resident Evil has in store in an official capacity.
