Capcom’s Jun Takeuchi has hinted that more Resident Evil remakes could be in the planning stages beyond what the publisher has already confirmed. Since launching in 1996, Resident Evil has become one of Capcom’s most successful franchises. In recent years, the company has prioritized remakes of the earliest games in the series, improving on the gameplay as well as elements of the narrative.
Resident Evil Veronica was announced earlier in 2026, and it’s slated for release at some point in 2027. The game is a remake of Resident Evil — Code: Veronica, which was originally released on Dreamcast in 2000. Thus far, little else is known about the game at this time. Fans of the series had been asking for a remake for several years, and many were disappointed when a remake of Resident Evil 4 was prioritized first by Capcom.
In the Biohazard 30th Special Mook, executive producer Jun Takeuchi discussed Capcom’s current strategy for the Resident Evil series. While new entries like Resident Evil Requiem are driving the narrative forward, the remakes are giving newcomers a chance to follow the earlier storylines. Takeuchi specifically mentions that these remakes will eventually “catch up” with the new entries, leading to increased speculation that remakes of Resident Evil 5 and 6 might be planned for the future. A remake of Resident Evil 5 has long been rumored, though nothing has ever been confirmed.

Capcom’s modern Resident Evil remakes have largely been based on well-regarded games. However, Resident Evil 5 and 6 were fairly controversial upon release. Both games moved away from the survival horror elements that popularized the series, with a much bigger focus on action. Resident Evil 6 was even more divisive than RE5, and Capcom decided to make big changes to the series with the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Given the negative associations many fans have with these entries, Capcom would likely have to make some big changes to ensure that the current standards of the series are upheld.
Remakes of Resident Evil 5 and 6 seem inevitable at some point, but fans could be waiting for a long time. In addition to Resident Evil Veronica, rumors claim that remakes of the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero are both in development. A remake of the original Resident Evil was released in 2002, but a lot has changed for the series since that game’s arrival on GameCube. A modern remake would allow Capcom to use the current RE Engine, while abandoning the fixed camera angles present in both the 1996 and 2002 versions.
It’s easy to see why Capcom might be eager to dive into more Resident Evil remakes. The modern remakes have sold very well for the company, and 2019’s Resident Evil 2 recently became the best-selling game in the series. As long as these games continue to sell well, it’s a safe bet that Capcom will continue to keep remakes a priority alongside wholly-new entries like Resident Evil Requiem.
