A new mod has been released that adds virtual reality to Resident Evil Requiem. Players who have already enjoyed the latest in the long-running horror franchise can now revisit Resident Evil Requiem in a whole new way.
Resident Evil Requiem is a bit unique, in that it combines both third-person and first-person perspectives. Resident Evil 7 was the first of the series to put players solely in first-person perspective, which was continued in its sequel, Resident Evil Village. However, the latest entry shook up the formula a bit by allowing players to play through Resident Evil Requiem in either first- or third-person perspective, with the idea that first-person would be scarier than playing in the over-the-shoulder view long-time fans have become accustomed to.
Resident Evil Requiem Review: A Horror Gaming Masterpiece
By expertly blending pure horror and over-the-top action, Resident Evil Requiem becomes the ultimate Resident Evil experience.
Resident Evil Requiem Mod Gives the Game a VR Mode
That option to use first-person perspective comes in handy with this new mod, which allows players to go through the entirety of Grace and Leon’s gameplay entirely in virtual reality. The mod, simply called RE9VR, has been created and shared by Talemann, and can be downloaded now from NexusMods. The mod is designed to work with both OpenVR and OpenXR, and should work with nearly any PC-compatible virtual reality headset, like the Valve Index or the Meta Quest.

While simply letting players see the game in virtual reality would be impressive enough, the mod also includes a few extra features that add further immersion. Players can swing an axe with their motion controllers, for example, and can play in 6DOF. The bike section of the game has been switched to first-person “wherever possible” for the sake of immersion, and players can customize the crosshair and choose whether they want parts of their character model to be visible while playing. There are a few downsides to the mod, largely due to the framework it uses to run, including not being able to use scopes. Despite that, players will likely find a lot to enjoy here overall.
Surprisingly, there have been no announcements yet made regarding an official VR mode for Resident Evil Requiem. Recent releases in the franchise like Resident Evil 7, Village, and Resident Evil 4 have seen VR modes exclusive to PlayStation, with RE 7 using PS VR and Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 using PS VR2. A reduxed version of the original Resident Evil 4 is also available in VR exclusively for the Meta Quest line of virtual reality headsets. These versions have been fairly popular, so it’s likely that an announcement will be made at some point for Requiem. However, Resident Evil Requiem has DLC in the pipeline, so that may be Capcom’s focus for now.
It’s possible that the lackluster sales of the PlayStation VR2 may be part of the reason why a VR mode hasn’t yet been announced for Resident Evil Requiem. Within a year of its release, Sony paused production of the PS VR2 headset, and one of the two Sony-published VR games has recently been delisted from the store and will go offline later this year. If Valve is successful in releasing its Steam Frame VR headset as planned this year, it could theoretically drum up enough interest in PC VR gaming to see the aforementioned Resident Evil titles’ VR modes added to the PC versions of the games. However, no official announcements have been made from Capcom regarding PC VR versions at this time.
Gamers who are interested in playing RE 7 or Resident Evil Village in VR on PC will likely be pleased to know that while an official VR version doesn’t exist, mods to add VR to those games can be used instead. While not for the faint of heart, those who are looking for some extra scares might want to check them out and experience the games in a whole new way.
