Resident Evil Requiem contains a nod to the events of Resident Evil 7, but chances are you didn’t notice it during your playthrough. Resident Evil Requiem is, in many ways, a love letter to the Resident Evil franchise as a whole – a way to celebrate its 30th anniversary. It mainly pays homage to Resident Evil 2, particularly the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake, but it also has nods to various other games in the franchise.

Resident Evil Requiem famously sees Leon S. Kennedy return to Raccoon City, and he even pays a visit to the remains of the Raccoon City Police Department. Leon’s ordeal in Resident Evil 4 is also referenced in Resident Evil Requiem, like the chainsaw-wielding enemies and the various one-liners that Kennedy throws at Requiem‘s villains. Many of the classic Resident Evil game references in Requiem are pretty obvious, but one RE7 Easter egg is very difficult to find.

Resident Evil Requiem Has Clever Easter Egg Referencing RE1 and RE0 That You Probably Missed

Resident Evil Requiem players discover a clever Easter egg referencing RE1 and RE0 that is very easy to miss.

Grace’s Laptop References the Events of Resident Evil 7

In fact, the only way that we even know about it is because Reddit user KnyH_82 used a freecam tool on the PC version of the game to get a better look at Grace’s laptop during one of the earliest cutscenes in the game. A flashback at the beginning of Resident Evil Requiem has new protagonist Grace Ashcroft sitting in a hotel with her mother, typing away on a laptop. We get a brief glimpse at the laptop screen in the cutscene, but Reddit user KnyH_82 was able to use the freecam tool to show exactly what was on it.

A closer view of Grace’s laptop, shared by Reddit user GMAERS_07, shows Grace using Reddit (or a fake Resident Evil universe Reddit equivalent) and looking at a thread discussing the events of Resident Evil 7. The commenters discuss the various characters that died in Resident Evil 7 and theorize if it may be related to the “giant black monster” that was seen in the area. In particular, the thread discusses the Baker family themselves and what could have possibly happened to them. Please note that the thread has MAJOR SPOILERS for Resident Evil 7, so only read it if you have completed that game.

A Closer Look at Grace’s Laptop in Resident Evil Requiem

On the side of the screen, it’s possible to see some other threads on Grace’s laptop. These include conspiracy theory threads on topics like the government supposedly conducting experiments on children, alien mice on the moon called “Clingers,” people asking if there are still infected in the world, and people that don’t trust the BSAA (the in-universe organization dedicated to fighting bio-organic weapons).

It’s a fascinating detail, especially since it’s basically impossible to see in-game. Perhaps Capcom anticipated that Resident Evil Requiem PC players would use things like a freecam tool to get a better look at the game, and left things like this in it for them to discover. Whatever the case may be, Grace’s internet habits also feed into her character’s choices in Requiem.

Based on Grace’s Reddit habits, it looks like she was potentially considering going down a similar career as her mother, Alyssa Ashcroft. For the uninitiated, Alyssa was a journalist, and so it stands to reason that Grace would want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. However, perhaps due to Grace’s experience in the aforementioned Requiem flashback where the laptop cutscene takes place, she eventually decides to pursue law enforcement instead, and becomes an FBI agent.

Grace is an FBI agent for the present-day events in Resident Evil Requiem, but she is still wildly inexperienced when it comes to surviving a biohazard incident. This is highlighted by Grace’s sections in Resident Evil Requiem being slower and scarier than Leon’s, which are much more action-packed. Players are also encouraged to play Grace’s sections in Resident Evil Requiem in first-person, which is another way she has a connection to Resident Evil 7.
