Rockstar Games discusses weapon and NPC behaviors in Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing a major change from the previous game in the series that may result in players getting in more trouble if they’re not prepared. Since the Extended Look on Netflix, Rockstar Games has been more open about new aspects of GTA 6, giving fans a clearer picture of how some features have evolved or stayed the same.

Time continues to tick down for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, and excitement seems to be continuing to grow. Rockstar Games doubled down on the GTA 6 launch, showing confidence that another delay won’t be happening. Thanks to the Extended Look event on Netflix, fans have seen tons of new gameplay and learned a lot about how things have changed for this newest release. Rockstar’s Rob Nelson has also been providing a whole lot of new information as of late, including the confirmation of a redesigned feature which will have an impact on players walking around Leonida.

Grand Theft Auto 6 NPCs Are Much More Reactive to Weapons

In an interview with YouTuber TGG, Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson explained how more reactive NPCs are in Grand Theft Auto 6. Nelson confirmed that a lot of work has gone into the “behavioral sophistication” and nuanced elements of NPCs, highlighting the fact that in GTA 5, players were able to pull out weapons like a shotgun and barely get a reaction from the people walking around unless they were then aimed at. However, for this release, the world will react to player behavior and could lead to plenty of encounters with the newly redesigned police system in Grand Theft Auto 6.

For example, Nelson revealed that NPCs will absolutely react if a player is simply walking around with a gun in their hands, as that is something that isn’t normal. There is a level of nuance here as well, as Nelson went on to say that if a player has a long gun slung on their back, NPC reactions won’t be nearly as severe. However, equipping it or holding it in the player’s hand will definitely change how NPCs react, as that is considered more threatening.

In addition, Rockstar has seemingly taken a bit more inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2 for the development of GTA 6. Later in the interview, Nelson confirmed that players will be able to have 2 concealed weapons on them at all times without triggering NPCs or causing issues. However, for those that want to push things and start using weapons with more firepower, players no longer have access to “unlimited pockets” and will need to ensure they have storage solutions in place, such as a hideout locker or a storage crate in a vehicle trunk.

The element of realism extends to other aspects of the game as well. While Rockstar may not be forcing players to keep up with bathing or grooming like it did with Arthur in RDR 2, players will need to ensure cars have gas, check in with their partner from time to time, and that their characters eat right or gain weight. However, one thing that seemingly went a bit too far is a cut feature in GTA 6 that forced players to buy groceries. Nelson admitted that the feature was cut as it took the simulation elements in GTA 6 a bit too far, though he did confirm that the feature is still there as an optional mechanic as players can still buy things like beer or food as consumable items.
