Even more potential details surrounding the yet-to-be-announced Nintendo Switch 2 console have leaked online. Nintendo itself has not formally revealed the Switch 2, but persistent rumors and leaks have suggested that the console is coming sooner rather than later. Some reports have even suggested that the Switch 2 release date will be late 2024, as opposed to 2025, which has been previously rumored.

It remains to be seen exactly when the Switch 2 will be out, but fans can count on the console coming eventually. After all, the Nintendo Switch has been a massive sales success, and Nintendo has consistently released new gaming hardware since the 1980s, even when its consoles haven’t done well. Fans should take any leaked information about the Switch 2 with a grain of salt, but fresh details on the device may have leaked online.

Nintendo Switch 2 Rumor Suggests Console Could Be Releasing Sooner Than Expected

A new report suggests the Switch 2 may release earlier than expected, in addition to identifying one of the console’s alleged key parts suppliers.

The latest Switch 2 leaks stem from Switch accessory maker Mobapad, which allegedly posted the details on its Bilibili page. These details were then summarized by Resetera user –R, with reputable Nintendo leaker Pyoro chiming in to say that it seems the information has been known to “some manufacturers” and “Nintendo influencers” in China for some time, but they were unable to verify the details with their main source. They said that similar information had been “mentioned in some private discussions” in the past.

Nintendo Switch 2 Leaked Details

  1. The Bluetooth chip of Switch 2 still supports existing Joy-Con and Pro controllers, and still features HD vibration (ALPS dual-axis linear motor).
  2. Switch 2 has backwards compatibility with Switch 1 cartridges, but Switch 2 cartridges will be different and won’t fit on a Switch 1.
  3. The new joycons are larger and are magnetically attached to the console with an electromagnet. The SL and SR buttons are metallic now, and there’s a new button behind each joycon (location where the button is) and a new button below the home button on the right joycon (location where the button is)
  4. The dock still has an USB-C port and will also support 4K image output.
  5. The new kickstand also has a damping bracket on the back for improved angle adjustment.
  6. The screen is bigger, up to 8 inches and the resolution is upgraded to 1080p.

According to the leaked details, the Switch 2 Bluetooth chip supports existing Joy-Con and Pro controllers, with the controllers supporting HD vibration. It’s said that Switch 2 will be backward compatible. The report backs up recent claims about the new Joy-Cons using magnets instead of rails. It goes further to say that the Joy-Cons have additional buttons.

The Switch 2 dock is said to have a USB-C port and support for 4K image output, a revamped kickstand with “improved angle adjustment” and a bigger screen with 1080p resolution. Assuming all of this information is accurate, it sounds like the Nintendo Switch 2 will be a definite upgrade over the original Switch, though as always, fans should treat these claims with healthy skepticism until Nintendo itself provides clarification.

It’s unclear when Nintendo might announce the Switch 2 console. As it stands, Nintendo’s second-half of 2024 is pretty bare at the moment, with the rest of its major announced games expected to be out by the end of summer, except for the long-in-development Metroid Prime 4. There have been some whispers that Metroid Prime 4 may be shifting its focus to Switch 2 anyway, though that remains to be seen. Ultimately, fans will just have to wait patiently until Nintendo decides to unveil the Switch 2, or whatever it ends up being called, to the world.
