- The rebooted Lords of the Fallen series by Hexworks impressed some fans of the genre, with the next entry having a chance to win over even more genre enthusiasts.
Information about a sequel to Lords of the Fallen has potentially been leaked. This came along with details about other upcoming projects from Lords of the Fallen publisher CI Games.
The original Lords of the Fallen from 2014 was one of the first games to replicate the “Soulsborne” formula. It is a video game subgenre that is defined by its extremely challenging combat encounters and bosses. This can be a dealbreaker for many, but others flock to these games for their ultimately fun and gratifying gameplay loop. Before Lords of the Fallen, FromSoftware was the primary developer to have offered this style of gameplay. Since then, there has been a steady rise in the number of Soulslike games released today, with last year’s Lies of P being particularly well received. But what also came out to great success was a new and improved reboot of Lords of the Fallen, made by new developer Hexworks.
What to Expect From Soulslike Games in 2024
Last year was something of a breakout year for Soulslikes, and with some more exciting titles coming soon, 2024 could reach the same heights.
According to a recent trademark filing by publisher CI Games, Hexworks could potentially be working on a sequel to Lords of the Fallen. The unannounced project is codenamed “Project III,” with the official title likely to be Death of the Fallen. This sequel is supposedly planned for release in 2026 and will run on Unreal Engine 5. It is likely that Death of the Fallen will be released on PC and the current generation of consoles.
Soulslike games have garnered a massive fan base since FromSoftware popularized the genre with Demon’s Souls back in 2009. Two of its games, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring, were both highly acclaimed and were awarded Game of the Year in 2019 and 2022, respectively. Elden Ring even beat out its primary competition from that year, God of War: Ragnarok, which had swept many other awards in 2022. With upcoming indie titles such as Phantom Blade Zero and Black Myth: Wukong having many gamers excited, the genre seems to be thriving.
Deck13 made an interesting and ambitious game with the original Lords of the Fallen, but last year’s successor by Hexworks made some great improvements and proved to be a worthy entry into the long line of Soulslike games that have been released over the past few years. This next entry in Hexworks’ reboot series has the potential to please not only current fans of the series, but fans of the genre as a whole.
