- Insider Nate Drake claims that a new Banjo-Kazooie game is an “active project” that received the green light in early 2022.
- The potential revival of Banjo-Kazooie has been teased by Phil Spencer, the Head of Xbox, who has expressed that the Xbox team “hears” Banjo fans.
- The developer for the new Banjo-Kazooie game is unknown.
A new Banjo-Kazooie game could be in development, according to the latest rumors. The original Banjo-Kazooie is often pointed to as one of the absolute-best games ever released for the Nintendo 64, and while Banjo-Tooie isn’t remembered quite as fondly, it still earned a great deal of critical acclaim. The series largely went off the rails after Banjo-Tooie, with the GBA games Grunty’s Revenge and Banjo-Pilot failing to drum up much interest.
In 2008, Rare released Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, a bizarre new entry that took the focus away from traditional 3D platforming and put it on building vehicles to complete various objectives. While there appears to be more appreciation for Nuts & Bolts nowadays, many would agree that it simply doesn’t do a good job of filling the void left by its predecessors. Unfortunately for fans, the Banjo-Kazooie series has been dormant since Nuts & Bolts, though there have been occasional rumblings of a potential revival.
Banjo-Kazooie Fan Makes Incredible Trailer for Banjo-Threeie
Project Dream creates a gorgeous trailer for the much-desired sequel to beloved platformers Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie: Banjo Threeie.
The latest hint fans have gotten that Banjo-Kazooie may be making a comeback comes from insider Nate Drake on Resetera. In a forum post, they claimed that the new Banjo-Kazooie is an “active project” that got the green light in early 2022. Nate Drake didn’t provide any further details about what the new Banjo-Kazooie game may entail, so at this point in time, its genre, developer, and potential release window are all mysteries.
Like with all rumors, fans should take these claims with a grain of salt, though it’s worth pointing out that Nate Drake has proven to be a reliable source of insider information in the past. Not only that, but Head of Xbox Phil Spencer himself has teased that Banjo-Kazooie could one day make a comeback, stressing that the Xbox team “hears” Banjo fans. This isn’t the same as an official announcement, of course, but it does inspire confidence that fans will one day get a new Banjo-Kazooie game.
If a new Banjo-Kazooie does materialize, it will be interesting to see which developer handles the project. The obvious choice would be for Rare to make the game, but it’s currently busy with its Sea of Thieves live service game and the new IP Everwild. Xbox has many studios under its umbrella that it could potentially trust with reviving the Banjo-Kazooie IP, though time will tell who takes charge and if the project ever even sees the light of day.
Banjo-Kazooie is a 3D platformer and collectathon game from developer Rare, the same company behind Donkey Kong 64. In this release, players will control Banjo and his feathered friend Kazooie as they attempt to rescue Banjo’s sister from the witch Gruntilda.
