A fourth mainline Spyro the Dragon game might be in development at Toys for Bob, at least according to a new rumor. Fans have been itching to see the spunky purple dragon in a starring role once again for a long time, as there hasn’t been a new completely original Spyro game since The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon way back in 2008. Over the past decade or so, Spyro has been relegated to supporting roles and cameos in titles like Skylanders and Crash Team Rumble, though fans got to replay his first three adventures thanks to 2018’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

The success of Spyro Reignited Trilogy has renewed speculation of the former PlayStation mascot making a comeback under the Xbox umbrella, especially after Microsoft purchased Activision Blizzard and, by extension, the Spyro the Dragon franchise. Back in September, word of a fourth mainline Spyro game subtitled Mystery of the Dragon started to spread across the internet, though it ultimately remained unannounced despite the leaks claiming it would be confirmed in October. More recently, a tweet from an official Spyro the Dragon social media account had gamers buzzing about big news to come in 2024.

Toys For Bob, the studio behind the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, is splitting from Activision in a move that promises risks and rewards.

Prominent Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot YouTuber Canadian Guy Eh recently claimed that a Spyro 4 is currently in development at Toys for Bob in one of his latest videos. He apparently discovered this while attending PAX East 2024, where developers discussed hearing things about the next Spyro game. A few days ago, a report came out that Xbox struck a deal with Toys for Bob to fund its next game, which prompted Canadian Guy Eh to reach out to the people he spoke to at PAX East – and one of them seemingly confirmed that Spyro 4 has been in development since January.

Toys for Bob May Be Developing Spyro 4

Of course, this is all just second-hand information at the moment, and fans would be advised to take these claims of a new Spyro the Dragon sequel with a grain of salt until a more official confirmation comes along. Toys for Bob, the developer behind the aforementioned Spyro Reignited Trilogy as well as 2020’s Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, announced that it was leaving Activision and becoming an independent studio earlier this year – though it did state that it was hoping to still produce games for former parent company Microsoft under a less restrictive partnership.

The first game that Toys for Bob develops as an indie studio could very well be the next Spyro the Dragon game if Canadian Guy Eh’s claims are to be believed. While the later Spyro titles grew more divisive as the series went on, there is still plenty of nostalgia for the little purple dragon, and fans are eager to see him take flight in a brand-new adventure following his latest playable appearance in Crash Team Rumble.
