Colman Domingo responded to rumors claiming Marvel Studios is eyeing him to replace Jonathan Majors as Kang in Avengers 5. However, the acclaimed actor is seemingly in the dark as much as fans.
Majors made significant waves in February 2023 when he headlined Ant-Man 3 as the main villain, Kang The Conqueror. However, the actor’s name was sullied in late March when Majors was arrested in New York City and subsequently tried for assault and harassment, later being found guilty of two misdemeanor counts. Marvel Studios dropped Majors as Kang and is faced with choosing a new villain for Avengers 5 or recasting the role, with Domingo rumored to be a potential contender.
The news that Domingo might replace Majors as Kang was reported by Daniel Richtman, who often reveals scoops for Marvel films. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight backstage at the 35th Annual Palm Springs Award, Domingo addressed the Avengers 5 recasting rumors head-on. “I’m always looking at what I have to do right now… I know there’s talk and conversations around, and I don’t know how much is true,” He stated. “I don’t even get that from my team, I can’t tell if it’s true or not.”
While Domingo is seemingly in the dark, he appears to appreciate the support he’s received from fans. “The fans are passionate,” he adds. “Somehow my name is out there in the world [and] I like the idea of just having your name called and someone speaking lovingly and kindly about something is a beautiful thing.”
Domingo came to prominence acting on Broadway and appearing in Law and Order. However, he came to significant attention working on Fear The Walking Dead and has since appeared in the Candyman remake, the musical adaptation of The Color Purple, and more popularly, Euphoria, where he played opposite Zendaya as Rue’s sponsor, Ali. Domingo also recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Bayard Rustin in the Netflix film Rustin.
It is not confirmed if Domingo will play Kang in Avengers 5, but with Majors out and Domingo receiving lots of buzz, it would not seem out of the ordinary if he were to step into Kang’s shoes.
