A brand-new mod released for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas adds a zombie-themed makeover to the classic open-world game, complete with an original story and new mechanics. GTA: San Andreas has been a fan-favorite in the series since the game first debuted in 2004.
The open-world game, set in the fictional state of San Andreas, was a landmark release for the Grand Theft Auto series. GTA: San Andreas added numerous new features to the game, from the ability to swim for the first time in the series to driveable bicycles. The game also offered a much larger world for players to explore than previous entries in the franchise, expanding from Los Santos into the entire state with multiple major cities and smaller towns dotted around the map. Now, a brand-new mod for GTA: San Andreas has completely reimagined the game’s setting as being gripped by a zombie apocalypse.
GTA: San Andreas Mod Adds a Zombie Apocalypse
The newly released GTA: Infected State mod overhauls GTA: San Andreas into a survival horror game centered around a zombie infection. Players take control of a pair of FBI agents tasked with investigating a mysterious disease that has turned the citizens of San Andreas into ravenous zombies in an original story created for the mod. The expansive overhaul adds a full-fledged inventory system to GTA: San Andreas, as well as RPG elements like character progression, leveling, and even boss fights. The astounding Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas mod even features a first-person mode, which the original game did not have.
GTA: Infected State follows in the footsteps of several official zombie-themed DLCs for some of Rockstar’s other games. Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare was a hugely popular expansion for the beloved western game, pitting protagonist John Marston against the living dead. While it did not feature a full expansion like Undead Nightmare, Red Dead Redemption 2‘s Red Dead Online included its own take on a supernatural expansion with the Strange Tales of the West DLC, which included zombies, robots, and swamp creatures as special missions for the online game.
The zombie mod for GTA: San Andreas serves as another testament to the enduring legacy of the classic GTA game. GTA: San Andreas holds the record for the best-selling PlayStation 2 game of all time, selling 17 million copies and beating games like Gran Turismo 3 and both GTA 3 and Vice City. Rockstar eventually returned to the state of San Andreas in 2013 with the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5, giving players a new look at the city of Los Santos and completely revamping the surrounding state.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise is gearing up for its next major release in just under a month, which will be one of the franchise’s biggest yet. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to officially launch on November 19 and has already made waves in the years leading up to its release, with early trailers smashing through YouTube records. Grand Theft Auto 6 captured the Most Anticipated Game award two years in a row at The Game Awards, and is projected to earn Rockstar as much as $5 billion in revenue within the first week of its debut. The GTA franchise will begin its next era soon, but San Andreas remains one of its most timeless titles.
