While God of War Laufey will focus on Faye, series creative director Cory Barlog reassured fans by stating that Kratos will still be the focus of future God of War stories. Though he will still have a presence in the upcoming PS5 title, God of War Laufey will be the first game in Sony’s hit franchise to not include Kratos as the main character.

God of War Laufey was officially revealed during the final segment of the June 2 State of Play broadcast. God of War Laufey had a 22-minute debut that showed fans a glimpse of the game’s opening sequences. God of War Laufey will see players control Faye, Kratos’ late wife, as she navigates through the afterlife of the gods called the Everywhen. Faye will also battle other deities from various mythologies as she learns that the promise she made to Kratos and Atreus before her death may be in peril. God of War Laufey currently has no release window, though it will be exclusive to the PS5.

God of War Laufey Leaks 2nd Playable Character

God of War Laufey features Faye as the main playable character, but leaks claim that she won’t be the only one in the game.

God of War Developers Confirm That Kratos Still Has Stories to Tell

Despite the early criticism that God of War Laufey received following the State of Play, Santa Monica Studio assured fans that Kratos will be back in the spotlight in future tales. Sony posted an interview between God of War series creative director Cory Barlog and Laufey game director Ariel Lawrence immediately after the State of Play. Barlog confirmed that, while Laufey will be entirely Faye’s journey through the Everywhen, Santa Monica Studio is not done with Kratos. Barlog said, “Faye is, while it’s a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore, all these different characters in there. But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.”

Lawrence said that, when she returned to Santa Monica Studio in 2021 to be the director of Laufey, she admitted her surprise to learn that it was focused on Faye and not Kratos. Lawrence said, “I had just assumed it would be another Kratos game and that was who I would be telling stories about for the rest of my life.” Lawrence concurred with Barlog and said that Santa Monica Studio still has stories to tell about Kratos. Neither Lawrence nor Barlog elaborated further about future God of War titles that may be released after Laufey.

However, Kratos will still be the main draw of another ongoing project at Santa Monica Studio. God of War Trilogy Remake is in development for the PS5. The upcoming compilation will retell Kratos’ personal conflict with the Olympians and various monsters from Greek mythology. God of War Trilogy Remake will also see Kratos’ original voice actor, TC Carson, reprise his role.

Additionally, God of War will have an Amazon Prime Video TV series debuting in 2027, which will feature Kratos, Atreus, and other characters from the Norse pantheon. Though Kratos will take on a supporting role in God of War Laufey, it’s only a matter of time before the Ghost of Sparta returns to the spotlight.
