With the release of Pokemon Champions comes a flood of new Mega Evolutions available for players to use in a traditional battle setting for the first time. The new Megas that were added in Pokemon Legends: Z-A debuted in a game without Abilities and one that utilized an active-time battle system rather than the series’s standard turn-based battles. As such, Pokemon Champions has allowed some critters to carve out a place in the competitive scene now that they can go toe-to-toe with other Mega Evolutions, and one Pokemon is already the clear-cut choice for the strongest of the bunch.
Mega Evolutions haven’t been a relevant part of competitive Pokemon battles since the Gen 7 era, as the mechanic was removed in Gen 8 and didn’t return until Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Now that Pokemon Champions reintroduces Mega Evolution to the competitive Pokemon scene with a batch of new critters capable of Mega Evolving, players will have to reacquaint themselves with the top Mega Evolutions from the series’s past and check out how these new Megas stack up. Of the new Legends: Z-A Megas available in Pokemon Champions, Mega Froslass stands head-and-shoulders above the rest to become one of the best Megas in the franchise.

Prior to getting a Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Froslass was basically useless in competitive Pokemon battles, being far outclassed by better Ghost and Ice types. However, after gaining a Mega Evolution, Froslass suddenly gained the potential to be a competitive powerhouse with its increased stats while Mega-Evolved. The viability of Mega Froslass largely depended on what Ability it gained when Pokemon Champions launched, and now that the game is out, Mega Froslass’s Snow Warning has elevated the critter to the top of the meta.
Mega Froslass’s Snow Warning Ability Makes it an Incredibly Valuable Weather Setter
- Snow Warning — The Pokémon makes it snow when it enters a battle.
Weather teams are popular among competitive Pokemon players for their ability to manipulate the environmental conditions of the battle, and Snow has become one of the stronger options since it replaced Hail in Gen 9. With Snow active, Ice-Type Pokemon gain a 50% increase to their Defense, and Blizzard, which typically has a 70% chance to hit, gains 100% accuracy. Not only does having Snow activated immediately upon Mega-Evolving give Mega Froslass better bulk, but it also guarantees its strongest STAB move will hit opponents.
The Best Moves for Mega Froslass in Pokemon Champions
- Aurora Veil
- Blizzard
- Shadow Ball
- Icy Wind
Since Mega Froslass thrives by taking advantage of the Snow in play, having Blizzard as its primary Ice-Type STAB move is a must. While it doesn’t take advantage of Snow, Shadow Ball is the ideal Ghost-Type STAB move for Mega Froslass. Another crucial move to use with Snow active is Aurora Veil, which reduces incoming damage by 50% in single battles and 33% for both active Pokemon in double battles, but it can only be used while Snow is active. Icy Wind is another solid option on Mega Froslass for its secondary effect of reducing the opposing Pokemon’s Speed, allowing Mega Froslass’s already high Speed stat to give it the advantage over other fast creatures.

The Best Partners for Mega Froslass in Pokemon Champions
- Archaludon
- Kingambit
- Hisuian Arcanine
- Incineroar
While Mega Froslass is completely usable in Pokemon Champions‘ single-battle format, it really thrives in the double-battle format used for official Pokemon VGC competitions. When using Mega Froslass in double battles, there are a few potential partners that make ideal companions, benefiting from Mega Froslass’s strengths or making up for its weaknesses. A powerful Steel-Type like Archaludon or Kingambit is a great choice to pair with Mega Froslass, since they can benefit from the use of Aurora Veil to reduce incoming damage and make up for their deficiencies in Special Defense.
Other great options for Mega Froslass’s partners are strong Fire-Type Pokemon like Hisuian Arcanine or Incineroar. Both of these mons can resist opposing Fire-Types like Mega Charizard Y while offering protection for Mega Froslass. For example, Hisuian Arcanine’s STAB Rock-Type moves can easily dispatch Mega Charizard Y, and Incineroar’s access to Dark-Type STAB moves can deal with the pesky Ghost-Type critters that can threaten Mega Froslass with super effective damage.
