Developer Krafton Montreal has officially unveiled Project Windless, a new action RPG title for the PlayStation 5. The reveal was made during the February 12 State of Play event, which featured tons of other titles set to arrive on PlayStation 5 in the coming months and years, including a new John Wick game, a remake of the original God of War trilogy, and much more. But it was Project Windless that caught the attention of gamers around the world for one big reason: you can play as a giant humanoid bird.

PlayStation kicked off yesterday’s show in a big way, revealing a trailer for an unexpected sequel to Kena: Bridge of Spirits. The announcement was then followed by even more big reveals, including a multiplayer co-op mode for Ghost of Yotei, a PC version of Death Stranding 2, and another look at Resident Evil Requiem ahead of its launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC later this month. There were also some unexpected reveals, such as a John Wick game from Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive, and a new open-world action RPG from Krafton Montreal.

A new free-to-play PUBG: Battlegrounds spin-off just hit Steam, and user reviews suggest publisher Krafton could be in trouble.

Krafton Unveils Project Windless During February State of Play

Project Windless was just one of the many massive reveals during the February State of Play event. Developed by Krafton Montreal, this new open-world action RPG is set in a fantasy universe heavily inspired by the Korean novel series, The Bird That Drinks Tears. This dark and tragic series, first published in 2003, revolves around a world inhabited by four major races: the humanoid bird species known as Rekons, humans, flame-wielding Tokkebi, and the reptilian Nhaga. However, instead of adapting the famous Korean story, Krafton has opted to travel back thousands of years before the events of the books and explore a turning point that was barely touched upon in The Bird That Drinks Tears.

If you hadn’t already guessed by the giant bird seen in the trailer, Project Windless follows the Rekon, a nomadic warrior race of humanoid birds, known for their immense physical strength and size. Krafton says the Rekon’s speed, reach, and physical presence were perfect for the one-versus-many combat fantasy at the game’s core. Aside from their physical strength, Krafton says the Rekon race is also complex, solitary, and has strong personal beliefs and vulnerabilities, including a well-known fear of water. “These traits made them feel more real and helped us create a strong, memorable protagonist who is not invincible,” the game’s creative director said in a blog post.

Aside from the powerful Rekons, Krafton’s newest game also comes with a unique combat experience that Krafton says is “bigger and wider,” driven by the raw chaos of battle. Players will battle against dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of enemies at once. The studio notes that these enemies are now just “visual noise,” but are brought to life through innovative mass technology. They move, flank, surround, and react to your actions, turning every battle into a living, unpredictable spectacle. This means players must read the situation, adapt, and react in each battle to come out victorious.

There’s currently no release window for Project Windless, nor has it been revealed whether or not the action RPG will be coming to any other platforms outside of PlayStation 5. Krafton is currently gearing up to release Subnautica 2, which has been surrounded in controversy over the last year after Unknown Worlds co-founders were fired with immediate effect on July 2, 2025. Due to the ongoing lawsuit between Unknown Worlds and Krafton, Subnautica 2 was delayed from 2025 to 2026, but a firm release date has still yet to be revealed by the studio.
