God of War: Sons of Sparta is officially emerging as a commercial bright spot for Sony after the lower-priced PS5 spin-off broke into a key sales chart for February 2026. In doing so, the spin-off appears to have delivered a notable early-year result for Sony, suggesting the company’s biggest franchises may have room for more God of War: Sons of Sparta-style games in the foreseeable future.
Developed by Pittsburgh-based Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with Sony’s own Santa Monica Studio, God of War: Sons of Sparta was shadow dropped on February 12, 2026. It materialized on the PS Store moments after its reveal trailer debuted during the latest PlayStation State of Play showcase. Six weeks later, the 2D metroidvania appears to have seized a sizable portion of new player spending, at least in the United States.

God of War: Sons of Sparta Debuts in Top 20 Best-Selling U.S. Games
The clearest sign of the spin-off’s strong debut to date comes from Circana’s latest stateside video game sales rankings for February 2026, shared by executive director Mat Piscatella. According to the monthly rankings, God of War: Sons of Sparta finished at number 14 on the overall chart. It also debuted at number six on the PlayStation-specific chart, which tracks PS4 and PS5 game sales in the U.S. For added context, Sons of Sparta outperformed Ghost of Yotei, Forza Horizon 5, and the evergreen Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in the multi-platform rankings.

The game’s placement is especially notable because Circana’s software charts are organized by dollar sales rather than unit sales. In practice, that means Sons of Sparta reached that position despite launching at $29.99, well below the standard price attached to many new console releases. Therefore, in order to outperform a full-priced PlayStation game like Ghost of Yotei, it needed to move more than twice as many units.

As per usual, Circana’s February 2026 data is U.S.-focused and thus not necessarily indicative of global trends. Nevertheless, it paints God of War: Sons of Sparta in a highly positive light, not least because the U.S. is the world’s second-largest video game market in terms of both revenue ($49.8 billion) and players (224.8 million), according to a recent Newzoo study based on 2025 industry data.
Had God of War: Sons of Sparta been released in the first half of the 2020s, the new metroidvania would likely have been able to count on a commercial second wind from Steam sometime in the future. However, that is no longer a certainty, with a February 2026 report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier suggesting Sony is pulling away from PC ports moving forward. Some titles that were greenlit for a PC years ago may still make the jump, but it is unclear whether Sons of Sparta made the cut.
Irrespective of platform availability, the game’s early success suggests Sony may be more willing to experiment with similar spin-offs in the near future. Such projects will not necessarily be smaller-scale single-player titles, even if they are part of traditionally single-player franchises, as evidenced by the recently announced Horizon Hunters Gathering from Guerrilla Games.
