Sony surprised PlayStation 4 users by releasing a new system firmware, dubbed version 14.02, as a security update for the last-gen console. Although the PS4 has been superseded by the PS5 since the latter console’s launch in 2020, that has not stopped Sony from releasing periodic updates to ensure system stability and improve performance on the older hardware.
Over a month after Sony released PS4 firmware version 14.00 as a minor performance update, the gaming giant has released another patch for users to download and install. However, PS4 gamers looking for any substantial features to be added to the last-gen console will be sorely disappointed, as the version 14.02 update is solely a security patch. The update was released amid Sony’s ongoing effort to crack down on hacking and jailbreaking efforts aimed at PlayStation consoles across the globe. Some of these hacking exploits were also present in the previous PS4 version 14.00 firmware update, which went live in mid-September 2026. However, it is currently unclear how effective the 14.02 firmware update will be at combatting any current exploits affecting PS4 consoles.
