The classic RTS franchise StarCraft has a brand-new game officially in the works, Blizzard has announced. The upcoming StarCraft game won’t be like anything the franchise has seen before, and fans won’t be able to play it for quite some time. However, over 15 years since the release of StarCraft 2, fans finally have confirmation that the franchise is not dead.
StarCraft originally released all the way back in 1998 as a pioneer in the sci-fi RTS genre. Although the original StarCraft was re-released as StarCraft Remastered in 2017, a brand-new entry in the franchise hasn’t been seen since 2010’s StarCraft 2. The final release for StarCraft 2 was the Legacy of the Void expansion in 2015, and with StarCraft Remastered, it’s been nearly a decade since the franchise has received any new content.

While a new StarCraft game has been heavily rumored for years at this point, Blizzard finally put that speculation to rest with confirmation that a new game in the franchise is in development. Unlike past StarCraft games, this new entry won’t be an RTS and will instead feature shooter gameplay set within an open world. Not much is known about how it will play based on the cinematic shown during BlizzCon 2026, so fans will have to stay tuned for future updates from Blizzard.
This revitalization of the franchise comes amid rumors that StarCraft could be sold to Nexon, giving the developer rights to produce future entries. While this announcement doesn’t confirm the completion of this sale, it does show that Blizzard is still interested in working with the StarCraft IP and that the dormant franchise is waking up after a decade-long slumber. It may not be the traditional RTS experience or true StarCraft 3 that old-school fans have wanted, but this new direction for the franchise could see it return as one of the major pillars of Blizzard.
The new cinematic revealing the return of StarCraft showcased the brutality of the Dominion and its soliders, despite no gameplay being shown. StarCraft isn’t the only Blizzard franchise to get a major announcement during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony. Diablo was officially announced to be getting a new animated Netflix series as well. Luckily, fans of other Blizzard IPs have new content coming down the pipe very soon.
Overwatch revealed its next hero coming in Reign of Talon Season 5, the new Support Hero Doctrine. Additionally, Roadhog and Sombra are getting reworks, the latter of which is becoming a Support Hero as well. World of Warcraft Forever was officially revealed as the official name of the long-rumored Classic+, bring a new yet familiar experience to Azeroth for fans to experience at their own pace.
