Stranger Than Heaven has received another trailer that confirms it will feature five explorable cities across just as many eras. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has also shared several other new tidbits about the upcoming title, including the date of its next showcase that promises to offer a deep dive into numerous aspects of Stranger Than Heaven.

First announced as Project Century at The Game Awards 2024, Stranger Than Heaven received its official name during the subsequent Summer Game Fest in June 2025. RGG has consistently described it as a cinematic crime drama spanning numerous decades since its reveal, but while keeping many key details under wraps. Most notably, the Japanese developer has repeatedly refused to elaborate on whether Stranger Than Heaven is set in its ever-expanding Yakuza universe, though that is looking increasingly likely.

Stranger Than Heaven Gets an Action-Packed ‘5 Eras’ Trailer

Stranger Than Heaven was treated to a new trailer during the March 26 Xbox Partner Preview event, which states that the game will take place in five cities spanning five eras. The upcoming title will thus be even larger than initially announced, as RGG previously only hinted at the story spanning three distinctive eras. The new trailer, however, reveals the full list of years in which the story unfolds: 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965. While additional years may be covered, they aren’t expected to have extensive gameplay sections.

Like earlier promotional materials, the new trailer centers on Mako Daito, a mysterious individual who appears across multiple eras, as he can be seen visibly aging. He is expected to be Stranger Than Heaven‘s main protagonist, though the 50-year timeline suggests he may not be the only one. As for the playable cities, Kamurocho and Sotenbori both appear once again in the Xbox Partner Preview trailer, adding to speculation that Stranger Than Heaven is part of the Yakuza universe, possibly as an origin story for the Tojo Clan. The timeline places the game just before the clan’s rise, which the series’ lore has never dated explicitly but strongly suggests occurred sometime between the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Stranger Than Heaven Confirmed Eras

The newly shared footage suggests Stranger Than Heaven will be mechanically similar to modern Like a Dragon games, featuring a deep combat system with grappling, weapons, and contextual environmental interactions. In a prepared statement, RGG Executive Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama said that the new trailer was “just the tip of the iceberg” in terms of what’s to come on the combat front. On that note, the studio is planning to share more details about the game as part of a dedicated showcase scheduled for May 6, at 4 p.m. PDT / 7 p.m. EDT.

The confirmation of five cities means that, purely from a map quantity perspective, Stranger Than Heaven will be the largest RGG game since Yakuza 5. Beyond combat, the new trailer also features several elements that Like a Dragon fans will recognize, including restaurant visits, smoking mechanics and mini-games, among them what appears to be at least one new addition: arm wrestling. As with earlier RGG action adventures, Stranger Than Heaven will feature a largely original soundtrack, which this time appears to draw heavily from various eras of Japanese jazz. Another similarity with recent Yakuza games is the presence of celebrity cameos, with the new trailer seemingly confirming Snoop Dogg’s involvement in the game, something RGG teased all the way back in December 2024.

The upcoming title is still waiting for a release window, which the new trailer simply describes as “coming soon.” Between that and the promise of an early May showcase, it is possible that Stranger Than Heaven is planned to launch near the end of 2026.
