Potential spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie aheadA listing for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie may have unintentionally spoiled one of the main antagonists of the movie. Given the success of the original Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination Studios, it came as no surprise when Nintendo kicked off Mario’s 40th anniversary celebration with a new movie announcement. The highly anticipated sequel is set to bring back much of the cast from the original film, with Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black all confirmed to return among multiple others. However, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will also introduce several new characters.
With the sequel movie’s clear inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, it is only fitting that Rosalina serves as one of its biggest new characters. Rosalina was among the first new cast members announced for the Super Mario Galaxy movie, set to be voiced by Academy Award winner Brie Larson. Bowser Jr. will also make his Mario movie debut as a major antagonist in the second film, played by Benny Safdie. Now, new leaks have seemingly confirmed that Bowser Jr’s starring role will see him teaming up with an unexpected character.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie Gets New Release Date, Reveals First Look at More Characters
Nintendo reveals a slightly earlier release date for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and shares a trailer that shows off some new characters.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie Listing Leaks Major Character
A listing from UK-based cinema firm Everyman suggests that a surprise character will play the role of one of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s main villains. According to the post, Wario is set to make his first appearance in the Illumination Mario movies as a major antagonist for the second film. The synopsis suggests that Wario will be joining forces with Bowser Jr. to take down Mario and Luigi in a quest for world domination, with the movie’s first trailer previously sparking speculation that Wario may appear within the film. The description does not confirm who could be voicing Wario for his potential appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The appearance of Wario in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie would not be too far of a stretch for the Illumination series. The studio has yet to confirm the return of Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong in the sequel, potentially seeing DK and friends not making a repeat appearance and opening up more space in the cast. Jack Black had also previously shared his own ideas for Wario’s role following the debut of the first Mario movie, suggesting that Pedro Pascal could be a good choice to portray the classic Mario villain. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on April 1.
Beyond Wario’s rumored role as a main villain, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to introduce a whole host of side characters to the film series. The recent Yoshi teaser trailer confirmed that Birdo will be making an appearance in a seemingly antagonistic role, alongside appearances by more classic Mario enemies like Mouser and Lakitu. Luigi is also expected to play a bigger role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with Mario’s brother spending much of the first movie imprisoned by Bowser. Mario series director Shigeru Miyamoto had high praise for the movie, confirming it will be the “main event” of the franchise’s 40th anniversary.
While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be the focus of the franchise’s anniversary, Nintendo had plenty more in store for fans. The announcement of the movie was coupled with newly released ports of both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 to the Switch, releasing just weeks after the 40th anniversary-focused Nintendo Direct. The Mario franchise also recently welcomed its first new sports game on Switch 2 in Mario Tennis Fever, and a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Super Mario Bros. Wonder is coming in March, along with a new Yoshi game in the spring.
