Blizzard has officially unveiled the new design for World of Warcraft‘s iconic Sylvanas Windrunner ahead of her return in November 2026. Sylvanas Windrunner is one of the most iconic and equally complex characters created by Blizzard, but her legacy has been tainted by the Shadowlands expansion and its reception among players. While a central character in the saga of World of Warcraft over the years, Sylvanas mostly disappeared after Shadowlands, but she came back with the Midnight expansion for a short yet crucial role.
In Midnight, Sylvanas returned in WoW‘s March on Quel’Danas raid for Season 1 at the very end of it. Her return was not seen by all fans as lore- or story-appropriate, as she comes back to defend Silvermoon “one last time” through a portal from The Maw. She protects her younger sister Vereesa and nephew Arator, with whom she shares an emotional hug and goodbye before returning to The Maw after the deed. It’s unclear what her story will look like in the future, but for now, players can rest assured that she will return on November 4 when World of Warcraft: Forever is released.
Sylvanas is Officially Returning With a New Design in World of Warcraft: Forever
While Sylvanas’ fate in WoW remains unknown, she is undergoing a character redemption arc, or at least some form of penance for her actions. In World of Warcraft: Forever, she returns with a new design compared to vanilla WoW, where her character model was simply a Night Elf. Instead, Sylvanas gets a new model in Forever that looks like a Blood Elf, but with a darker skin tone to match her Undercity appearance. She is taller than regular characters, but her height is the same as it was in vanilla, and so is her armor. This is not the same model fans know from Shadowlands, and her bright red eyes and darker skin make for a much more compelling introduction to the character than the OG Night Elf.

Sylvanas’ new model is visible in the beta, but WoW: Forever‘s launch on November 4 will mark her official return as the Dark Lady of the Forsaken. Not only that, but Sylvanas’ role could also change in the future. While she still plays a major role in establishing the Forsaken’s base in the Undercity, Thrall is still the leader of the Horde, and Vol’jin’s death in Legion may never happen in the new timeline. This leaves a lot of untapped potential for Sylvanas’ story in World of Warcraft to go very differently, considering that WoW: Forever‘s timeline will not go through the same canon events as retail and Classic.
Thrall may not stop being the Horde Warchief, and while WoW Classic‘s Cataclysm expansion saw Vol’jin evolve as a character the same way he did in retail, he will supposedly not take Thrall’s place or die against the Legion. This may never create a power vacuum for Sylvanas to become leader of the Horde, and future WoW: Forever content releases may never put the focus on this part of the story.
WoW: Forever will be an interesting game when it comes out, especially with lots of all-new quests, items, and zones. For those who want a focus on the factions’ conflict, a new separate World of Warcraft Horde and Alliance release for November 2026 has been announced, though it will not feature Sylvanas.
