Take-Two has issued a new statement on the online multiplayer mode that’s in the works for the highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to be an absolute mammoth release when it launches in November, with the open world game expected to smash all kinds of records. While fans had to suffer through long stretches of silence, more information on the game has come at a steadier clip as of late.
First there were the Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay leaks, followed by the official Extended Look on Netflix. The GTA 6 Extended Look showed off about 30 minutes of gameplay from the single-player story, highlighting the dynamic between protagonists Jason and Lucia, as well as some of the missions they will be tackling in the game. Notably absent from the Extended Look was any mention of the game’s online multiplayer mode, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like fans will be playing it this year.
GTA 6 is Single-Player
At the latest Take-Two shareholder meeting, the company issued an update on the GTA 6 online multiplayer mode: “GTA 6 is a single-player title and is due to release this November. We will continue to support GTA Online after GTA 6 release and beyond.” What this means is that while there will almost certainly be an online multiplayer mode for GTA 6, it’s definitely not going to be there at launch, and in fact, it’s highly unlikely it will be available this year at all. The statement also points to there potentially being even more substantial updates for the existing GTA Online mode in the pipeline, so fans may be waiting even longer than expected.
Rockstar hasn’t said anything about what fans can expect from the GTA 6 online multiplayer mode, but leaks have suggested that it will feature a focus on user-generated content. Some leakers have gone as far as to compare it to games like Roblox and Fortnite, where the online can potentially become a gaming platform in and of itself. The wild success of GTA 5‘s online means that an online multiplayer mode based on GTA 6 is an inevitability, but based on the recent statement, it does seem like fans will be waiting an especially long time to play it. Don’t expect GTA 6 online to come until 2027 at the earliest.
Millions of GTA fans will no doubt be disappointed by this news, but on the bright side, this means Rockstar can focus its full attention on the single-player experience for launch. It also means that fans shouldn’t have to worry about GTA 6 having any online connectivity issues at launch, since online won’t be a factor. It also gives Rockstar the freedom to keep microtransactions out of GTA 6 when the game launches, though expect them to be introduced when online eventually comes.
GTA 6 may not have an online multiplayer mode at launch, but fans can expect an expansive single-player experience. The GTA 6 open world is massive, and the game will easily deliver dozens if not hundreds of hours of content, if previous Rockstar titles are any indication. No online is disappointing, but GTA 6 should still be a massive release come November 19.
