Pokemon Winds and Waves is bringing forth a new chapter of the beloved franchise. The wait for Gen 10 has kept a lot of Pokemon lovers eager to see what the series has in store next, and they just got their first sneak peek. Pokemon Winds and Waves is set to take players to a beautiful archipelago inspired by Southeast Asia, but that isn’t all that fans have to be excited about.
After plenty of speculation, the official Winds and Waves starter Pokemon have finally been revealed. The starter trio is adorable, so it’s going to be hard to choose between the three. Grass-type Browt, Fire-type Pombon, and Water-type Gecqua are all unique in their own right, but Water-type fans may have something truly special with Gecqua as their starter. This gecko-like creature’s design is fantastic, and it has already inspired plenty of fans to predict what its further evolutions could be through fan art.
Pokemon Winds and Waves Share More Starter Details
Game Freak follows up on the Pokemon Winds and Waves announcement with a few more details concerning the starter mons in the upcoming RPGs.
Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Gecqua Has Sparked A Lot of Discussion About Its Evolution Line
As exciting as these starter Pokemon are, developer Game Freak still hasn’t revealed what the next two stages of their evolution will be. Since Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ release date isn’t until 2027, it may be a while before more details are revealed. This has led many fans to speculate about the more mature versions of this Pokemon trio.

Choosing the best starter Pokemon is not easy, but Gecqua could be the perfect choice for both Water-type fans and reptile lovers. Because of Gecqua’s design, some are already theorizing that the lizard-inspired Pokemon is going to evolve into a Water-Psychic hybrid. This would make sense, considering the water droplet on its forehead resembles a third eye, and it has already been confirmed to be smart. Gecqua’s official Pokedex entry says, “This Pokémon launches springy balls of water from its tail. Gecqua is very intelligent and maneuvers shrewdly while putting on airs.” This is still only a small amount of information, but it has inspired plenty of great fan-made designs in a short amount of time.
From Adorable Lizard to Powerful Psychedelic Being
This design from Mr_Topped_Octo on Reddit only shows the final form of what they believe Gecqua will become, and it’s impressive. The Pokemon still keeps its lizard-inspired form intact, but it now looks more alien-like. Instead of Gecqua’s third eye being on its forehead, the marking has descended to its chest, opening into what appears to be a portal. This fan design leans heavily into the Psychic abilities that may be teased for Gecqua. The amount of Pokemon Winds and Waves fan art that has already sprung up is fascinating, and this take on Gecqua’s evolution shows just how inventive some players’ imaginations are. This design may not be the most likely final form for Gecqua, but it’s definitely fun to look at.
Gecqua’s Potential Psychic Abilities Are Put in the Spotlight
Reddit user VampericShadowfang takes a more grounded approach to their design, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t just as intriguing. Playing into Gecqua’s theorized Psychic powers is going to be a running theme with many of these fan designs. Psychic-type Pokemon are some of the most unique of the franchise, so it only makes sense for so many players to be excited about Gecqua’s potential abilities. The second and third evolutions shown in this fan art are fairly similar. The second stage has Gecqua transforming from a mere lizard into a floating being caught deep in meditation. The third stage kicks this up a notch, though. Now, Gecqua holds a mysterious orb and boasts a more prominent third eye.
A Subtle Gecqua Transformation That Demonstrates the Power of Simplicity
The concept behind Hottersoda’s design is reminiscent of VampericShadowfang’s, but the lack of a robe in the second and third evolutions makes it feel like an even greater possibility. This beautiful piece of work shows how sometimes the most effective designs can actually be the simplest. This version of Gecqua keeps a uniform color scheme throughout, while the third eye becomes more prominent with each form. Once again, the artist chose to play around with the potential Psychic powers, adding levitation to the two evolution stages. Winds and Waves‘ starter Pokemon details may be sparse at the moment, but plenty seem convinced that powerful Psychic abilities are in Gecqua’s future.
A Version of Gecqua That Subverts Expectations
Positive_Way_8051’s Gecqua evolution design still focuses on the Psychic theories, but the execution is vastly different from the other artworks. Instead of evolving into an alien-like levitating being, this design gives Gecqua’s final form a more dinosaur-inspired energy that is slightly reminiscent of Pokemon like Aurorus and Suicune. This imaginative iteration of Gecqua’s evolution shows just how differently fans can envision what the same Pokemon could turn into. A lot of fans have assumed that Gecqua is bound to become either bipedal or levitate, but Positive_Way_8051’s design demonstrates that a quadrupedal form could actually fit surprisingly well. Pokemon Winds and Waves theories are taking over the internet, and it will be fun to see how close some of these designs possibly get to Gecqua’s actual evolution forms.
Pokemon Winds and Waves will be the first mainline entry in the series to be a Switch 2 exclusive.
More Pokemon Winds and Waves Details Are Hopefully Waiting Around the Corner
Right now, Game Freak’s next batch of details regarding Pokemon Winds and Waves is a huge mystery. Theories about Browt and Pombon’s evolution are being talked about just as much as Gecqua’s potential forms. Many were surprised to find out that Pokemon Winds and Waves isn’t coming out until next year, but that could ultimately be a good sign. The game is already teasing a wonderfully unique Pokemon chapter, and it deserves as much time as needed to ensure a successful launch. As the year continues, it’s going to be fascinating to see what other Pokemon Winds and Waves details come to light. It may be a while before gamers learn more, but these fan designs are at least a lot of fun to look at in the meantime.
