It has now been nearly 8 years since The Elder Scrolls 6 was first announced, and since then, any info on it has been limited to simple confirmations that it is indeed still in development. Interestingly enough, Todd Howard has still insisted that Bethesda doesn’t like early reveals—with the added side note that The Elder Scrolls 6 doesn’t count—due to the anxiety that it tends to create among fans. He couldn’t be more right about that when it comes to TES6 either, as fans have consistently gotten their hopes up and have been continuously disappointed. Well, now, it looks like that could be happening again soon, and fans are already losing their minds about it.
It was recently announced that this year’s Xbox Games Showcase would be taking place on June 7, 2026, just a few days shy of the eighth anniversary of The Elder Scrolls 6‘s announcement. Naturally, there has been speculation that the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls entry would be making an appearance, though fans aren’t necessarily holding out hope for it. In fact, the Elder Scrolls 6 subreddit has been filled with sarcastic comments about hopes being dashed come June, ever since the Xbox Games Showcase was announced, as it seems the most realistic way to look at it is to hope for the best but be fully prepared for the absolute worst.
Not long after the Xbox Games Showcase for 2026 was announced, The Elder Scrolls 6 fans were taking to the game’s subreddit to build railroads for anti-hype trains—essentially preparing themselves and others for yet another event that would end without ever even mentioning the game they’ve now waited almost 15 years for. Over the last week, the forum has been littered with biting sarcasm, witty satire, and…Lord of the Rings memes? But the fact that any of it exists is a sign that, while fans are clearly hesitant to put any hope in the event actually meaning something for The Elder Scrolls 6, to quote Aragorn, “there is always hope.”

Beneath a Reddit post by Kuchichi_Byakuya titled “Xbox Games Showcase 2026 announced, are you ready to be disappointed?,” fans expressed agreement with the sentiment, replying with comments like “This is it. Until the next showcase, then that will definitely be it” and “i have never been more ready.” In another post by Pleasant-Bend-7414 titled “LOOKS LIKE DELUSION IS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS,” fans kept their expectations at a minimum, saying things like “Im ready to be hurt,” “Nah it won’t be there. No one knows the time or the day, except Godd himself,” and “Between Fable and Gears there’s no chance for TESVI.”
To be fair, these hopeless comments couldn’t be more realistic. There is very little pointing toward an Elder Scrolls 6 reveal actually happening at this June’s Xbox Games Showcase—as the game simply has too much competition at the moment—and Todd Howard’s recent comments don’t help the case either. There are a handful of realistic expectations fans can have about the showcase, and The Elder Scrolls 6 most likely isn’t among them.
What to Realistically Expect From the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase
- FIRST-PARTY GAME UPDATES — Trailers and progress on major Xbox titles.
- FIRST GAMEPLAY REVEALS — Debut gameplay for upcoming first-party projects.
- GEARS OF WAR FOCUS — Dedicated E-Day deep dive immediately after showcase.
- NEW GAME ANNOUNCEMENTS — Fresh reveals from Xbox and partner studios.
- THIRD-PARTY PARTNERSHIPS — Global studios showcasing games alongside Xbox lineup.
- GAME PASS INTEGRATION — Day-one releases and new additions highlighted.
- RELEASE WINDOW CLARITY — Updates on 2026 and early 2027 launches.
- KNOWN FRANCHISE RETURNS — Appearances from titles like Fable or Halo.
- ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ELEMENTS — Xbox 25th anniversary and FanFest tie-ins.
Sure, The Elder Scrolls 6 could theoretically be among those “first gameplay reveals,” but at the same time, the game has only received an announcement teaser at this point. The next bit of footage offered by Bethesda is likely to be a full trailer with, at the very least, a release window attached to it. In most cases, gameplay reveals don’t happen until after that. The Elder Scrolls 6 could also be among the “first-party game updates” expected to happen at the showcase, but while there is more chance that will happen than a gameplay reveal, the game would be appearing alongside the likes of Fable, the Halo remaster, and Gears of War: E-Day. Xbox is unlikely to throw a highly anticipated game such as The Elder Scrolls 6 into a pool of other major reveals, making it an unrealistic thing to expect from the showcase.
The Gears of War: E-Day Direct Is the Biggest Outlier
But perhaps the biggest outlier in this whole equation is Gears of War: E-Day, as it is getting its own Direct immediately following the showcase. One would think that, were Bethesda actually prepared to do a major reveal of The Elder Scrolls 6, it would be the one getting its own Direct rather than Gears of War: E-Day. The upcoming Gears of War prequel does have a significant amount of hype behind it, to be sure, but even it can’t be expected to compete with the next mainline entry in the Elder Scrolls series.
Xbox is unlikely to throw a highly anticipated game such as The Elder Scrolls 6 into a pool of other major reveals, making it an unrealistic thing to expect from the showcase.
Plus, Bethesda did a Starfield Direct for it ahead of its own launch, so it would make sense to give The Elder Scrolls 6 the same treatment. And with the studio apparently waiting until the last minute to show anything else about the game, whenever a reveal does happen, it’s likely to be an extensive one. It wouldn’t make sense, after all the work that has gone into keeping it hidden for so long, and after all the years it has spent giving fans the silent treatment, for it to pump out just another teaser or otherwise insignificant reveal of any kind. Whenever The Elder Scrolls 6 finally decides to show itself, fans can expect it to arrive in a very big way.
Of course, there is always hope for something, even if that hope is considerably outweighed by despondency and caution. This June is also Bethesda’s 40th anniversary, so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to expect something big from the developer. Even so, there are several other things the studio could consider a worthwhile way to celebrate the milestone—like the announcement and even the release of the rumored Fallout 3 remaster. In other words, it might be best to stick with the sentiment most fans seem to be leaning towards, that The Elder Scrolls 6 is probably going to opt out of this summer’s Xbox showcase and will most likely stay quiet until the time feels even more right.
