The FPS world has gotten a lot bigger since the start of 2026, with so many amazing games being added in such a short time that it can be hard to even keep up with all the greatness. We have had the return of iconic franchises, long-awaited releases that were teased long ago, and a couple of surprise bangers that have managed to show that even smaller devs and brand-new names can compete at the table with the big dogs.

Far Far West

Helldivers Meets Cowboy Chaos

Details:

  • Fast-paced missions with several objectives
  • Satisfying progression systems for all kinds of players

Far Far West is one of the most surprising releases of 2026, not just in terms of FPS games but the entire industry. You and a group of friends are thrown right into the thick of it, tasked with galloping across the wilderness in search of treasures, all while completing objectives and fighting off hordes of enemies.

The gameplay loop feels very similar to Helldivers 2, where you spawn in and have all the freedom to move between locations and grab as much gold and resources as you could possibly want. After successfully finishing a mission, you return to the saloon, where everything from the guns to your personal stats can be upgraded, alongside some pretty interesting additions like jokers, which fundamentally alter how you play the game. Even though it’s in early access, I was still amazed at how much content there is, and I, for one, cannot wait to see what they have in store later down the line.

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire

Black And White Never Looked So Stylish

Details:

  • Classic rubber hose animation style
  • Tight boomer-shooter gunplay

MOUSE: P.I. hit my radar the second I saw the first trailer, and I can honestly say that the finished product not only meets my expectations, but surpasses them as well. Playing as the classy detective Jack Pepper, it is up to you to uncover the cheesy conspiracy that runs throughout the entire city, and a healthy dose of gunpowder is about the only thing that can bring the truth to light.

Saving with Samus in Metroid Prime 4 Beyond (2025)

5 FPS Video Game Series Better Than Borderlands

Borderlands is a king among FPS games and looter shooters, but could the following series steal its crown?

Much like many other boomer shooters, the main focus is on fast-paced action and high-octane gameplay, and you have access to a long list of weapons and tools that keep that momentum from ever slowing to a halt. If you are an FPS fan who is looking for a unique take on a classic formula, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another game this year that captures the same charm and energy as MOUSE: P.I.

3

Road To Vostok

Details:

  • Singleplayer extraction loop
  • More tense and challenging overall

Extraction shooters have exploded in popularity over the past few years, but most opt for a PvP gameplay style that pits you against many other hungry players all out for the same pool of loot. In the case of Road to Vostok, that idea is removed entirely, instead thrusting you into a world full of AI enemies that are still more than capable of putting up a fight.

Rather than focusing on constant firefights, the game emphasizes tension, resource management, and deliberate decision-making, letting you really control the pace of encounters without them ever feeling too overwhelming. I have been thoroughly impressed by the game’s dedication to atmosphere and have spent countless sessions just exploring the maps and learning how to engage enemy camps, as without that prep time, all that precious loot will quickly be gone forever.

4

Luna Abyss

The Definition Of Bullet Hell

Details:

  • Mind-bending locations and enemies
  • Rewarding gunplay that feels genuinely impactful

Luna Abyss is fast, eerie, and a boatload of fun, incorporating bullet-hell action and high mobility to deliver an FPS experience that you will struggle to put down. Blending high-speed first-person movement with dense bullet-hell encounters. Descending into the abyss below, you are forced to complete various missions that will push even the players to their absolute limit, both in terms of aim and sheer stamina.

The 8 Greatest FPS Video Game Trilogies Of All Time, Ranked

These trilogies are not just good; they helped redefine the whole first-person shooter genre in one way or another.

The game’s biggest strength is how different it feels from traditional shooters. Drawing inspiration from titles such as Returnal and Destiny, you are focused as much on movement as on your aim, and as someone who really values distinctive gameplay styles, I have no problem rating it as one of the best FPS games released in years.

5

Resident Evil Requiem

The Hot Streak Continues

Details:

  • Switches between pure survival horror and action
  • Perfectly executed dual narrative

Resident Evil Requiem shows once again that Capcom really is unmatched in the survival horror genre. Unlike many of the other modern entries and remakes, you actually get to choose between first and third-person gameplay, the former of which brings with it a much more intense and intimate style of gameplay that makes the scares land harder, and the action feels grittier than ever.

The dual narrative between Grace and Leon is so well executed, and it never felt like I was lingering with one character for too long, always between pure fear and survival horror at the perfect moment. I did my first playthrough in third-person, but after revisiting from the other point of view, I actually prefer the latter, and compared to the competition in the wider genre, there’s pretty much no horror game that can hold a candle to it, both in 2026 and in the past.
