Fear Tall Grass, a new dark fantasy creature-battler, has just been announced for the Nintendo Switch. Alongside a Nintendo Switch port, Fear Tall Grass will be heading to Xbox and PlayStation, as well as PC via Steam.

Fear Tall Grass is being developed by Forgotten Bastions and published by Entalto Publishing. While this appears to be the first major video game project from Forgotten Bastions, Entalto has published a handful of games since 2022. These include titles like Vampire: The Masquerade – Heartless Lullaby, a free-to-play CRPG set in the World of Darkness universe. Entalto’s most recent title is about as far away from the World of Darkness as one could get, with its in-house studio releasing SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off in August 2025.

Is The Switch 2 Worth It Now?

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been out for nearly a year, but is the hybrid console worth buying at this point in time? Or should you wait?

Fear Tall Grass is a New Creature-Battler Heading to Nintendo Switch

Announced via a reveal trailer posted to YouTube, Fear Tall Grass will see players assume the role of Gray, a child who has been thrust into the center of a holy war. As Gray, players must venture out into the looming tall grass that now covers most of the world and face off against the hostile beasts lurking within. To fend off these mighty foes, players will need to tame and capture some of these beasts, and use them as soldiers in their ongoing war.

Fear Tall Grass is putting strategy at its forefront, and as such, its core gameplay loop is multifaceted. During a mission, players will be presented with a square map that resembles a board game. Players will be prompted to roll some dice, and their character will move along the edge of the board one tile at a time. These tiles can offer up vital resources or threaten players with a combat encounter.

When a combat encounter is triggered, players will be met with a 2D arena with an enemy on one side, and their own beast on the other. Just like Pokemon, players will need to use turn-based inputs to command their beast (called Vilekin here) to attack the enemy. Once the foe is weak enough, players can attempt to capture the creature and add it to their team. According to Fear Tall Grass‘ Steam page, the game will feature 90 Vilekin at launch, with 15 unique types being present for each of the game’s six distinct elements. As can be expected, these six elements are all resistant or weak to one another. Alongside these Vilekin, players will have access to a range of Command abilities that can assist their critters in battle.

Between missions, players will return to The Sanctuary of Light, a hub where they can construct new buildings, unlock new mechanics, and invest in permanent upgrades to aid future runs. There’s no official release date for Fear Tall Grass just yet, but its Steam page does state that the game has a planned launch window of Q4 2026, meaning that the game could arrive between October and December of this year. It’s also currently unclear if Fear Tall Grass will be launching simultaneously across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, or if it will come to PC first and consoles at a later date.
