Baldur’s Gate 3: The Sunless Citadel has officially been revealed, bringing tons of new content for players to enjoy in Larian’s CRPG. While not an official Baldur’s Gate 3 release from Larian, this new custom campaign has plenty to keep players busy and give them a great excuse to return to the game.
Although Larian is largely done with Baldur’s Gate 3, the modding community is keeping it alive with brand-new creations uploaded every single day. Mods come in all shapes and sizes, but Baldur’s Gate 3 custom campaign mods are arguably the most impressive of all, giving players new story content to complete.
Baldur’s Gate 3: The Sunless Citadel Campaign is Available Right Now
After a recent reveal, Baldur’s Gate 3: The Sunless Citadel is officially available to download on Nexus Mods. Inspired by the 3rd Edition module of the same name, the campaign was developed by modder Batilfly over six months and adds about seven to eight hours of content to Larian’s 2023 CRPG. In terms of its gameplay style, The Sunless Citadel is more of a “short, linear dungeon crawl,” rather than a story-focused BG3 mod.
Creator Batilfly notes that this Baldur’s Gate 3 custom campaign has a few key differences from the base game. There’s no minimap, so it uses a custom teleport system that lets players travel to various locations. However, given that The Sunless Citadel largely follows a linear path, most won’t need to fast-travel in the way they might in Baldur’s Gate 3.

While players can download and play Baldur’s Gate 3: The Sunless Citadel for free right now, it’s still far from the finished product. There is no camp system in place yet, as it has “proven more difficult than expected,” but it is planned for the future. And while conversations with NPCs are present, there are no journal updates or quest tracking yet. However, it can be played in Baldur’s Gate 3 co-op, so it could be fun to jump in and try with friends.
It’s cool to see what talented Baldur’s Gate 3 modders have been creating over the last three years. Larian left the modding toolkit in the community’s hands, and it keeps delivering. Larian itself has revealed how BG3 modders are inspiring Divinity, its next game. Other games like Skyrim have shown how a popular modding community can keep a game alive way beyond its initial release, so hopefully Baldur’s Gate 3 can follow that path way into the future.
