The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has finally hit theaters. Through its fast-paced 98-minute sequel adventure, Nintendo fans were met with a ton of Easter eggs, franchise fanfare and even a few gaming icons that exist outside the massive Super Mario universe. Like all great adventures featuring this high-flying Italian plumber (Chris Pratt) saves the day from Bowser (Jack Black) and his evil son Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). Yet, just like the first film, you’ll want to stick around till the credits roll for two major teases for the larger Nintendo cinematic universe. Beware, there are major spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ahead.
Super Mario Meets Star Fox
The first post-credit scene has Fox dropping off Bowser and his son in a prison in an unknown location. Mario’s arch rival, now the infamous Dry Bone Bowser in literal pieces, initially tries to escape with the help of Bowser Jr. As they’re digging a hole, they’re greeted by an unfriendly familiar face: the death-obsessed blue Luma Bowser held captive in the first film. This delightfully crazed Luma got a promotion as a prison guard. It’s a humorous scene that reminds us that, even when they’re mentally scarred, Lumas can’t stop being endlessly cute.
As for Fox, he quickly converses with a Toad outside the prison before he blasts off back to his own universe. While this might be seen as just a nice way to bookend Fox’s story, this could be setting up a potential Star Fox spin-off film. It’s something that seemed like a distant pipe dream for fans of this niche franchise, but Powell’s love and electric enthusiasm for the character was felt throughout this intergalactic mission. Nintendo doesn’t do anything by accident. They’re a company that’s very protective of their properties. Especially when learning that Powell was campaigning for Nintendo to make a Star Fox film after the first Super Mario film was released, this sure isn’t the last time we’ll see him on the big screen. The actor’s nostalgic nudge was the reason Nintendo included Fox in this sequel as well. Anything is possible at this point when it comes to future Nintendo cinematic projects.
Star Fox has always been a rocky franchise to say the least. Even though games like Star Fox 64 (1997) are deemed classics, outings like Star Fox Adventures (2002) and Star Fox Zero (2016) have had a mixed reaction from the fanbase to say the least. The latter underwhelming Wii U game was the last nail in the coffin for that console generation and that 2016 title was the last time Fox had a solo adventure. It’s ultimately been a long decade for Star Fox. Yet, the Star Wars-inspired on-rails space shooter’s future has never been brighter. Who knows, alongside a possible spin-off film, maybe Powell could be doing a barrel roll in the games by voicing Fox in that interactive space too. Slippy, Falco Lombardi and Peppy Hare have been sorely missed after all.
“Here Comes Daisy!”
The second and final post-credit scene finally introduced the franchise’s last main princess: Princess Daisy. This short tease sees fans back in The Gateway Galaxy. This in the film was a central location full of Easter eggs. R.O.B, the Piantas from Super Mario Sunshine (2002) and the shady Wart (Luis Guzmán) and Birdo from Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988) are all seen throughout this sequence. This is also where our Super Mario team meets up with Fox. However, before that, the main plot thread here is a thrilling chase to get Toad’s backpack from the mischievous Ukiki the monkey. Ukiki, who debuted in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (1995), would return in Daisy’s post-credit scene. They’re seen once again stealing something from another helpless bystander and Daisy stops them right in their tracks.
The princess has no lines of dialogue, but her yellow dress is unmistakable. Like Yoshi in the first film’s post-credit tease, the third film looks to have a major focus on this often forgotten princess. While Daisy is mostly reserved for sports titles like Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, and Super Smash Bros., the princess of Sarasaland debuted all the way back in Super Mario land (1989). This first 2D Mario platformer for the Game Boy had Mario saving the latter instead of Peach. However, like Peach, Daisy looks like she can take care of herself in this ever-expanding cinematic universe.
In addition, another major component to Daisy’s story is Luigi. The two are often depicted as love interests, like Mario and Peach. Luigi even made a joke about Peach “having a friend” for him to date earlier on in the Galaxy Movie. This could also hint that Peach already knows and is friends with Daisy like in the games. Only time will tell how Daisy will be involved in an inevitable third film. It’s extra intriguing given the Galaxy Movie revealed that Peach and Rosalina are sisters. Would that change this princess team’s dynamic?
While we wait for more news on the next film and a potential Star Fox spin-off, you can currently play as both Fox McCloud and Daisy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018) on the Nintendo Switch. Daisy is also a playable character in Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023). This vibrant 2D platformer just got a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition that added Rosalina and Luma as playable characters. This was a tie-in for the Galaxy Movie’s release.
