CD Projekt Red has recently confirmed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold 65 million copies. This news came just one day after CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, a third full-fledged expansion coming to the beloved action-RPG in 2027.

First rumored to exist back in June 2025, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past will see players take on the role of the legendary monster-slayer Geralt of Rivia once more in a brand-new adventure that’s said to tee-up the events of the upcoming Witcher 4. This third major expansion is being co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory, a studio formed by ex-CD Projekt Red devs who have previously released Seven: The Days Long Gone and The Thaumaturge, and are currently at work on developing a full remake of the first Witcher game.

In a May 28 quarterly earnings report, joint CEO of CD Projekt Michał Nowakowski officially announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 65 million copies. Back in January, CD Projekt Red confirmed that the first Witcher game had a lifetime sales total of 10 million copies, while The Witcher 2 had sold 15 million copies since its original launch in 2011. This means that The Witcher 3 has already outsold its predecessor by over 50 million units. Towards the end of last year, CD Projekt Red also announced that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold over 35 million copies. While Cyberpunk has managed to achieve that impressive milestone in just five years, it still has a ways to go before it takes the throne from The Witcher 3.

It’s rather rare for a decade-old game to continue to move units in the sheer volume that The Witcher 3 has. While the game got off to an incredibly strong start, selling 6 million units in just six weeks back in 2015, that was just a fraction of what was waiting around the corner. The Witcher 3 managed to sell over 10 million units in a little less than a year, and by June 2019, that number rose to 20 million. In December of the same year, the first season of Netflix’s live-action Witcher show debuted, and sales of The Witcher 3 saw a 554% increase compared to the same period a year prior.

In April 2021, The Witcher 3 sold 30 million units, then 40 million in April 2022, then 50 million in 2023, and finally 60 million in May 2025. According to these rough figures, The Witcher 3 has consistently sold over 5 million copies every single year since 2019, which is no small feat.

While Tetris and Minecraft are both awarded the top spot on Wikipedia’s list due to a split in reliable sources, Grand Theft Auto 5 takes the clear runner-up spot with 230 million units sold. Following the recent announcement, The Witcher 3 is now sitting at the number 8 spot on the best-selling games of all time list, having a 7 million lead on Super Mario Bros., but still being 5 million shy of surpassing Terraria. Interestingly, Cyberpunk 2077 is currently the 25th best-selling game of all time.
