This Hotel Worker’s Animal Crossing Designs Will Make You Rethink Your Rooms

Running a hotel isn’t an easy business–now imagine working at one all day and then going home to Animal Crossing: New Horizons to do more hotel-related chores to unwind. That’s exactly what one real-world hotel receptionist has been doing over the last week.

Animal Crossing is a creative outlet that mirrors the precision and thoughtfulness of her real-world job for Reddit user jadelilymoon, who has also shared many of her designs in r/AnimalCrossing and received acclaim from other players. By day, they works the front desk at a small boutique hotel tucked into the charming old town of Zurich, Switzerland. By night, they meticulously designs spaces in Animal Crossing, applying lessons learned from real-world hospitality to virtual rooms.

“I work front-desk, so I’m closely involved with the guest experience day to day,” jadelilymoon tells GameSpot via message. “Checking guests in and out, answering questions, handling requests, and generally making sure people feel comfortable and at ease during their stay. With the early shift, I’m responsible for breakfast too, but at the moment it’s more late shifts. I don’t come from a hospitality background, but it’s the best job I’ve had so far.”

It’s a role that requires patience, attention to detail, and an eye for creating comfort–skills that translate surprisingly well into Animal Crossing.

“The game feels very different from work for me and more like a creative outlet,” jadelilymoon says. “I tend to think a lot about realism, flow, and how a space would actually be used rather than just how it looks. Designing hotel rooms in Animal Crossing is relaxing because I can focus entirely on atmosphere and feeling, without real-world constraints like budgets or regulations.”

Some of jadelilymoon’s designs have already made an impact on other players who’ve seen them. Her approach is methodical yet playful–she emphasizes restraint and focus.

“The most important thing is having one clear focal point that pulls the room together,” they explains. “Real hotel rooms usually aren’t packed with objects; they feel calm, intentional, and easy to move through, with a clear sense of where your eye is meant to rest.”

Every object jadelilymoon places has a purpose, whether functional or purely atmospheric. If an item that has been in a room for the design process suddenly doesn’t fit anymore, there’s no hesitation to remove it. It’s all about keeping a central focus. A room should feel welcoming and purposeful, not cluttered.

Color choice is another key factor in creating believable spaces–it’s easy to get carried away when customizing furniture, adding wallpaper, or layering rugs.

“I usually think in terms of one or two neutrals, one main color, and one accent color used very sparingly,” they said. “That kind of restraint helps a room feel more polished and believable rather than busy.”

Lighting also plays a critical role in her designs–a relatively new mechanic in the Animal Crossing series that allows players to experiment with mood and atmosphere. If players don’t have Happy Home Paradise and haven’t finished 10 rooms there, they don’t have the option to play with it. Even within the base game’s limitations, thoughtful placement of lamps, windows, and other light sources can dramatically affect how a room feels, reinforcing the intended mood or focal points.

“The game has so many great items, but using fewer of them thoughtfully often creates a much stronger result,” they said. Restraint isn’t a limitation–it’s a tool for crafting spaces that feel intentional, calming, and immersive.

The parallels between her job and her hobby extend beyond aesthetics. Both require consideration of flow, atmosphere, and the guest–or cute animal villagers–experience.

“I find that thinking about how someone moves through a space, or how a room makes you feel, really carries over from my work to my designs in Animal Crossing,” they said. “Even in a game, I’m thinking about human behavior and what makes a space functional and inviting.”

For Animal Crossing players looking to improve their interior design, simplicity is key. Leaving space for a few carefully chosen items helps a room feel more cohesive and intentional.

Between working at her Zurich hotel and designing rooms in Animal Crossing, jadelilymoon uses her real-world experience to guide her virtual spaces. Even small details, like a lamp or accent chair, can make a room feel well thought out and complete.
