Todd Howard has revealed what players can expect from future Starfield content, putting a dampener on the idea that a significant overhaul is on the way to Bethesda’s space RPG. Howard has revealed that gamers who are already Starfield fans will have a ton to look forward to with what’s to come for the game.

Starfield is an interesting case for Bethesda. Upon its initial release, Starfield received great reviews from critics, who praised the scale of Bethesda’s latest role-playing game. But among the gaming community, it was given a slightly colder reception, even with fans who typically enjoy Bethesda titles. This can be seen in the game’s SteamDB player count. Starfield, with a 24-hour peak concurrent player count of 3,827 at the time of writing, has considerably fewer players than both Fallout 4 and Skyrim, which have 24-hour peaks of 36,062 and 30,021, respectively. It’s important to note that Starfield is also available on PC Game Pass, which will naturally affect the Steam player count. Starfield has also been affected by a lack of post-launch content. Since its September 2023 launch, there has been just one expansion pack, with a second one announced but not yet revealed.

New Starfield Content Won’t Win Over Gamers Who Didn’t Enjoy The Game Previously

Speaking on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Todd Howard spoke a little about what to expect from future Starfield content. “Obviously we’ve been working on a lot of Starfield content, we haven’t talked about it yet,” Howard confirmed. “The end of last year was prickly, for us. We have periods where we focus on IPs and franchises, and Fallout obviously dominated the fall and earlier this year, but you’ve seen it.” With the success of the Fallout TV show, Bethesda has continued to release new content for Fallout 76, as well as the Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition. Howard then revealed when fans can expect to hear about the upcoming things it has been working on for Starfield. “And I can tell everybody we’re gonna be talking about it really soon. We’re moving into a phase where we’re going to be talking about Starfield and really show that in the right way.”

For a long time now, rumors have pointed towards a major Starfield update in 2026, with some speculation that it would be a significant overhaul in the vein of Cyberpunk 2077‘s 2.0 update. According to Howard, the content that is to come is more for those who are already fans of the game, as he set expectations for its future straight. “It is not Starfield 2.0. I’ve seen some of that, and for expectation setting – I think it’s the kinda thing where, if you like Starfield, we think you’re going to love this. It’s updates and things that change the game, not in an isolated way, but you know ‘meta’ – using outer space and things in ways that we haven’t.

I think it’s the kinda thing where, if you like Starfield, we think you’re going to love this.

By the sounds of it, the new Starfield content is going to be for the fans, and Howard agrees. In fact, he’s not convinced that those who didn’t enjoy Starfield before will be won over by the upcoming stuff. “If Starfield is something that didn’t connect with you right away, or you bounced off it, or found it boring in places – I don’t think it’s going to change that fundamentally,” he explained. “But if you’re someone who loves Starfield and we think, we’re really happy with it.”

Bethesda has yet to reveal Starfield‘s second expansion, which is expected (but not confirmed) to arrive in 2025. Beyond that, the developer is also seemingly gearing up to bring Starfield to PlayStation 5, after over two years of Xbox console exclusivity. It would be cool to see gamers have more choices about where to enjoy Starfield, so hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.
