Konami’s recently released Silent Hill: Townfall has received a major update that adds a new difficulty mode just in time for Halloween, giving players another way to experience its psychological horror. Several new gameplay improvements are also hitting Silent Hill: Townfall as developer Screen Burn continues refining the experience following its September launch.
Released on September 24, Silent Hill: Townfall is the latest entry in Konami’s ongoing revival of its iconic horror franchise, following the successful Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f. The game takes players to the isolated Scottish island town of St. Amelia, where protagonist Simon Ordell must uncover a disturbing mystery through first-person exploration, puzzle-solving, and stealth. While critics have praised its unsettling atmosphere and storytelling, player reception has been more divided, particularly over frustrating stealth encounters and technical performance issues. Screen Burn has already released several updates addressing these complaints, and its latest patch appears to continue that effort.
Silent Hill: Townfall Update 1.6 Adds Hard Mode and More
Silent Hill: Townfall update 1.6 introduces a brand-new Hard difficulty mode, giving players another option between the existing Normal and Nightmare settings. The update also rebalances all four difficulty levels, adjusting resource availability and enemy hearing sensitivity to create a more consistent sense of difficulty progression throughout the game. Additionally, players can now see their position on the map regardless of difficulty, while additional hints and tutorials should make certain sections and puzzles throughout Silent Hill: Townfall easier to navigate. The patch is available now for PS5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, making it an especially timely addition for anyone hoping to revisit the game during Halloween.
What Screen Burn decided to target with this patch is particularly interesting given the controversy around some of Townfall‘s more punishing stealth encounters. One enemy in particular, The Weight, became a frequent source of frustration after launch, with players criticizing its tendency to linger near objectives and kill Simon instantly upon catching him. Silent Hill: Townfall‘s October 8 update made the creature less aggressive and replaced its instant-kill grabs with heavy damage on Story and Normal difficulties. However, update 1.6 now limits the reduced attack severity to Story Mode, suggesting Screen Burn is trying to strike a better balance between making encounters less frustrating and preserving the intended challenge.
The update also includes several smaller quality-of-life improvements that should make Townfall easier to navigate. Difficulty descriptions have been clarified, certain puzzle hints have been revised, and valve status lighting has been improved for colorblind players. The user interface is also much improved, with the options menu reorganized, and PC players now have support for Nvidia DLSS Ray Reconstruction, which could improve the visual quality of supported ray-traced effects. These changes follow earlier updates that addressed shader-compilation stuttering and other technical issues, although Konami hasn’t specified whether the new DLSS option will improve performance.
Townfall is also arriving at an interesting time for the broader Silent Hill franchise, which has experienced something of a renaissance after years of inactivity. With the Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill f, and now Townfall, Konami has demonstrated that it is willing to experiment with different developers, settings, and approaches to psychological horror, with many fans and critics appreciating that effort. Konami has not confirmed a substantial story expansion or sequel to Silent Hill: Townfall, but continued support could help improve its reputation among players who struggled with the original release. With Halloween approaching and another difficulty option now available, Townfall is giving both newcomers and returning players a good reason to return to St. Amelia for one more scare.
