Over the years, Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO video games have become extremely popular. Not only have they given players so many ways to interact with the buildable toys, but it has also adapted dozens of iconic movie franchises in glorious fashion. Players have been whisked away to Middle-earth, on wild Marvel or DC adventures, through the galaxy far, far away, and even on a massive crossover in the form of LEGO Dimensions. All of this has been great to see, however, the next LEGO game may be in a bit of a tough spot.

Since the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, a lot has changed within the LEGO video game landscape. For starters, reports of extensive crunch within Traveller’s Tales have damaged the studio’s reputation considerably. Along with that, LEGO has started branching out a bit more and allowing other video game studios to take the toys for a spin. And if that was not enough, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has also proven controversial with the LEGO fanbase. So, while the next LEGO game may be highly anticipated, there is a chance it may not be able to overcome these many obstacles.

A Lot Has Changed Since LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was perhaps one of the most anticipated LEGO games that Traveller’s Tales ever crafted. The LEGO franchise had been built on the LEGO Star Wars name, and this was set to be the biggest one yet. Not only was it going to adapt the prequels and originals once more, but it was also going to recreate all the sequels and give players massive open worlds to explore. And while that blend proved very successful, many fans were a bit disappointed with the overall outcome.


LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga ended up lacking some fan-favorite mechanics like character customization, which had become a staple of Traveller’s Tales LEGO games over the years. Additionally, the levels were criticized for being way too short, the replay factor was limited, and the brand-new engine caused numerous problems within the game. So, even though it may have been the ultimate LEGO experience, it seemingly failed to meet the high expectations set for itself.

On top of that, with the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, reports of extensive crunch within the studio came to light. Because of that, LEGO chose to reevaluate its exclusive contract with the studio and elected not to extend it. And now, other studios have been able to craft their very own LEGO games, with the likes of LEGO 2K Drive, LEGO Fortnite,and LEGO Horizon Adventures headlining this new direction. This means that as Traveller’s Tales’ reputation is soured, it is also no longer the face of the LEGO brand.


Traveller’s Tales Needs to Come Out of the Gate Swinging

Just because LEGO has chosen not to extend its partnership with Traveller’s Tales does not mean the studio cannot work on another LEGO game. In fact, rumors suggest that the next title will be a brand-new Harry Potter adventure, which will likely adapt the main eight movies and possibly the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. Although nothing has been officially announced yet, all eyes are watching to see if it can truly deliver.

There is a lot riding on this new LEGO Harry Potter game because it will show if Traveller’s Tales can still be the biggest name in the LEGO space with rising competition. Additionally, it will be the studio’s chance to show its fanbase and LEGO that its workplace culture has changed significantly. Plus, it will also be a test to see just how much farther the studio can take the LEGO concept after LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.


All of this sounds like it may be pretty hard to push through, but not impossible. If the studio takes its time, releases something truly worthy of the LEGO and Harry Potter names, and ensures it changes its ways, then fans may just flock to it. And hopefully, if it succeeds, then the brand has a bright future ahead of it.
