Kickstarter backers have flocked to fund a new indie tactical turn-based RPG called Soverain: An Eternal Legend, which draws inspiration from some of the genre’s biggest names, including the beloved Fire Emblem series. Many pixel-art RPGs with the same premise have launched in recent years, but Soverain: An Eternal Legend seems to have struck the right chord with fans, as it has already raised far more than it originally asked for on Kickstarter.
“Soverain is the realization of a dream I’ve carried with me since childhood,” says the creator, Jonathan Brassaud, who worked on the game for three years alone before deciding to fund his own studio, Tentacule Mauve. Brassaud has worked on several well-known games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Riders Republic.
New Multiplayer Strategy RPG is Blowing Up on Steam
A recently-released strategy RPG on Steam is making waves and quickly climbing to the top of the platform’s best-sellers list.
Soverain: An Eternal Legend Was Funded in 12 Hours
On May 12, after years of development, Brassaud launched a Kickstarter campaign for his “dream game,” Soverain, with the goal of raising about $30,000 USD. To his surprise, the campaign reached its target in less than a day and soon blew past it. As of this writing, Soverain has amassed over 700 backers and raised over $42,000. With support coming from Kickstarter backers and Tentacule Mauve’s publisher, Brassaud and his team are now committed to launching Soverain by the end of 2027. The game is set to arrive on PC, Steam Deck, and both Nintendo Switch consoles, with possible ports for other platforms in the future.

What to Expect from Soverain: An Eternal Legend
- Handcrafted pixel art inspired by games like Sea of Stars
- A rich political story aimed at a mature audience and inspired by Game of Thrones
- Emergent storytelling shaped by player decisions
- Deep character customization
- Base-building and exploration
- A branching battle system that can influence the story and NPC interactions
The devs describe Soverain as a tactical RPG inspired by legendary games like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy, paired with a deep and nuanced storyline, complex character-building and relationship mechanics, as well as interesting turn-based combat. What might set Soverain‘s battles apart from other Fire Emblem-inspired games is how they affect the story and character interactions. According to the developer, Soverain considers players’ decisions and their style of fighting to trigger new dialogues or bonus missions.
Soverain had already caught the attention of many tactical RPG and classic JRPG fans even before its Kickstarter campaign launched. The game was wishlisted by more than 18,000 people, which is an impressive milestone for an indie title of this size. That number will likely climb even higher now, as the campaign’s incredible success has put it in the spotlight.

Tentacule Mauve’s early success once again shows that the gaming industry still has an appetite for retro-inspired games that capture the same emotions as classic titles while adding improved visuals and creative gameplay twists. And based on the attention and support it has already received, Soverain: An Eternal Legend appears to be a game that could hit all the right notes for that audience. Fans of the genre also have Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave to look forward to. The eighteenth entry in the franchise is already one of 2026’s most anticipated games and should help satisfy the demand for well-designed RPGs.
