Breaking silence after a discovery regarding a Definitive Edition for Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Ubisoft promises more information ahead of the franchise’s 25th anniversary in August. The Definitive Edition seemingly leaked out a little earlier than Ubisoft wanted as images taken from online stores confirmed the new version of Ghost Recon Wildlands, prompting Ubisoft to address the discovery.
Fans have been eagerly anticipating an announcement for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon franchise, a series that has not only continued to be popular, but has continued to go through a major shift over the franchise’s past 25 years. Originally positioned as a military tactical shooter featuring a special forces unit going on highly classified missions, the Ghost Recon franchise has continued to evolve from the original few games through 2006’s Advanced Warfighter, into the near future with Future Soldier in 2012, and then the biggest series jump into the open world with the popular Wildlands release back in 2017. Despite rumors of the next Ghost Recon being in development hell, fans are hoping Ubisoft has more to say on where things are going.
Ghost Recon Celebrates 25 Years on August 6
In response to the Ghost Recon Wildlands Definitive Edition discovery, Ubisoft released an official message regarding the franchise’s future. Reviving the largely dormant Ghost Recon Twitter account, Ubisoft confirmed that there will be a bigger reveal happening on August 6 in celebration of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. Unfortunately, Ubisoft kept the message short, choosing to hold off on any more announcements prior to the promised August 6 reveal.

Thankfully, with Definitive Edition images circulating from the store page, fans already have a few ideas about what Ubisoft is planning. Straight from Ubisoft’s own store page, Ghost Recon Wildlands Definitive Edition appears to be set at $99.99 and will have a lot of content packed in, including the Season Pass, Year 2 Pass, a Quick Start Pack, the Deluxe Pack, Cold Eye Pack, and the Nightfall Protocol Pack. However, it also includes a “Major Update” called Last Rights, which appears to be a brand-new mission, alongside a 60FPS and 4K upgrade. While the original Ghost Recon Wildlands launched on PS4 and Xbox One, fans are expecting a native PS5 and Xbox Series X version to be announced as well.
While Ghost Recon Wildlands marked a major shift from previous games in the franchise, it proved to be a successful move for Ubisoft. Not only did the Ghost Recon Wildlands beta break player records ahead of launch, but the game would go on to be a major revenue driver for Ubisoft, pushing the company to follow the game up with Ghost Recon Breakpoint just 2 years later. Unfortunately, Breakpoint didn’t have the same impact and the franchise has largely been dormant since.

There is hope with some fans that the 25th anniversary announcement Ubisoft has planned will include more than just the Definitive Edition details. Not much is known about where the franchise could be heading, though fans have discovered that the next entry is codenamed Project OVR. From what little is known, the project has been in development for years at this point and reports indicate it has missed internal Alpha deadlines, which has led to some features being cut or rescheduled to help reach a potential beta phase by November.
