The story-driven survival sandbox game Permafrost is set to officially launch in early access on Steam on October 9, introducing players to a post-apocalyptic arctic world where exploration and strategy will be paramount to overcoming the brutal reality of an endless winter. Permafrost ranked among the Top 20 Steam Next Fest Demo titles, and fans who enjoyed their first taste of the frozen adventure only have a short while longer to wait before diving even deeper into the never-ending tundra.

Having already earned comparisons to games like The Division, Permafrost looks to scratch a familiar itch for fans of expansive open worlds by featuring gameplay mechanics that put players’ survival skills to the test through silence and scarcity. With building mechanics reminiscent of Fortnite and both solo and co-op approaches available, Permafrost aims to offer a fresh take on the apocalyptic survival genre.

Permafrost Early Access Officially Launches on Steam

In Permafrost, players choose between single-player or up to 4-player co-op before being drawn into a vast lore-rich open world by a lone radio signal from a lost friend. As a “Rook” engineer, players are tasked with using their skills to rebuild society on this near-future Earth, where a series of catastrophes led to the shattering of the moon and a devastating global deep-freeze. The Rooks will need to scavenge their way through the remnants of cities and the dangers of the wilderness, all while battling against harsh weather conditions and navigating faction-controlled territories. Preparation will be key to surviving against the ever-present cold, with progress earned through continuous exploration and clever adaptation. Whether taking a solo or multiplayer survival and crafting approach, a dog companion will join along the way to help scout ahead, carry supplies, and give danger warnings.

One of the more unique elements of Permafrost’s co-op is its emphasis on symbiotic survival. Players are not required to make progress together and can instead choose to focus on different tasks simultaneously, which in turn can either speed up progress or simply let each member of the team focus on the duties they most enjoy. Groups can build shelter networks, explore diverging paths, and stockpile resources, though the inclusion of multiple players does not necessarily mean an easier experience. Solo survivors can streamline their own journey by not having to worry about sharing resources and having the freedom to advance at their own pace. Ultimately, the gameplay of Permafrost leaves plenty of room for survival fans to enjoy the game to their own preference.

One crucial element to keep in mind when entering the world of Permafrost is that the cold and snow can shape every venture out into the wilderness. This means players will need to strategize in advance but also prepare for a change in plans at a moment’s notice. Fans familiar with the survival game The Long Dark can expect a similar atmosphere while having an even larger world to uncover and deep lore to unravel.

The popularity of open world survival games often hinges on the uniqueness of the environments players are dropped into, along with the need for addictive gameplay and satisfying progression. Early demo reviews for Permafrost have praised each of these elements, and many have already voiced an interest in jumping back into the apocalyptic winter. Permafrost launches in early access exclusively for PC via Steam on October 9, with a full content roadmap already in the works from the developer.
