Valve Comments on Steam Machine Power

Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine will have more powerful specs than what 70% of Steam users currently have on their PCs, according to a Valve engineer. While high-end custom PCs still outclass the Steam Machine, Valve’s new system may still be a portable alternative to the majority of Steam’s current user base.

First unveiled by Valve on November 12, the upcoming Steam Machine is a cube-shaped PC that can run SteamOS or any operating system that users want. The Steam Machine is made with playing Steam games on a TV in mind, as it is powered by a six-core, semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU that can reach clock speeds up to 4.8 GHz. The new Steam Machine also includes an RDNA3 graphics processor with maximum sustained clock speeds of 2.45 GHz during game play. The Steam Machine was revealed alongside the Steam Frame VR headset and a new Steam Controller. Valve’s new hardware lineup will launch sometime in 2026, though a precise release date remains unknown.

The Steam Machine May Be More Powerful Than It Appears

Although Valve stated that the Steam Machine will be six times more powerful than the popular Steam Deck, a Valve engineer stated the upcoming system will be a technical improvement for a majority of Steam’s user base. In a YouTube video by Norman Chan of Adam Savage’s Tested, Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat stated that the 2026 Steam Machine is at least on par with, if not better than, 70% of what Steam’s users are utilizing on average. Aldehayyat said that the target specs behind the Steam Machine were based on user data gathered by Steam’s monthly hardware surveys. According to Steam’s October 2025 hardware survey, the most popular PC specs include Windows 11 as the main operating system, a six-core Intel CPU paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 8GB graphics card, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and one to two monitors that run at 1080p.

When compared to the Steam Machine’s AMD-powered specifications, Aldehayyat’s comments hold some weight, as an RDNA3 graphics card can hold its own against an RTX 3060. The reveal of the Steam Machine has also garnered attention across the gaming industry, with Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer congratulating Valve. Spencer noted that Xbox Game Studios is one of Steam’s largest publishers, and that the company welcomes more ways for gamers to play their favorite titles.

The Steam Machine may provide some stiff competition in the gaming hardware space. It remains to be seen how successful Valve’s latest projects will be, but fans will find out next year.
