Valve has given an update on its upcoming Steam Machine hardware and when fans can expect it. A decade ago, Valve made its first attempt at the Steam Machine, partnering with various computer manufacturers in an effort that was largely unsuccessful. This go around, Valve is producing the hardware itself, and that has generated significantly more interest in the endeavor.

Valve announced its new take on the Steam Machine last year, but has yet to confirm pricing details or a firm release date. Unfortunately, the ongoing RAM crisis is causing serious problems for Valve’s Steam Machine, and it’s believed that the device’s price is going to be significantly higher than originally planned as a result. Valve has yet to divulge those details, but the company did give fans looking forward to the device an encouraging update.

Steam Machine Gets Encouraging Update from Unexpected Source

Some people are certain Valve’s Steam Machine is set to be released soon, following a new piece of information from a surprising source.

Valve Says Steam Machine is Releasing This Summer

Valve recently announced that it was adding the Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR headset to its verified program. This announcement included a mention that both the Steam Machine and Steam Frame would be releasing “this summer.” Summer starts on June 21 and ends on September 22, so expect the Steam Machine to release at some point within that timeframe. Effectively, that means the Steam Machine is launching within the next few months, so pricing information and an exact release date should be revealed sooner rather than later.

If Valve is sticking to the summer 2026 release window for the Steam Machine, it will be interesting to see when it decides to release the device. September 2026 seems like it would potentially be the worst possible month to release new hardware, as the month is jam-packed with new game releases. September is stacked with a ton of games as developers and publishers try to avoid releasing too close to the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, and so consumers may be less likely to buy a Steam Machine that month if they want to spend their money on new games instead.

Historically, the summer months are slow when it comes to new game releases, and it looks like that will be the case for 2026 as well. June, July, and August all do have some notable new game releases, but nowhere near the volume of September. A release in July or August would likely be best to avoid competition, but maybe Valve will surprise fans and release the Steam Machine sometime later this month, as unlikely as that may be.

Whenever Valve decides to release the Steam Machine, it will be interesting to see how much the device costs and what kind of impact it has on its sales. The current theory is that the Steam Machine could potentially cost around $1,000 if not more, which is about the price that many are expecting for next-generation gaming consoles like the PlayStation 6 and Xbox’s Project Helix. Whether consumers are willing to pay these kinds of prices or will reject the hardware remains to be seen, but the Steam Machine could be the first major test.
